“Cholos” blamed in attack on transient bicyclist with arrest warrant

August 19, 2007, 12:36 AM
Police came to Highland and Cermak in response to a call about a man on the ground.  They found a 28-year-old man, bleeding from his face, apparently having fallen from his bicycle. He was taken to the hospital for treatment, where it was learned that he had bleeding on his brain, as well as a blood alcohol level of .142, nearly double the legal limit.  Doctors told police the injuries were not likely related to the fall.  The man had surgery for the injuries to his head and face.  He told police his name was Miguel Silva.  Through a translator, Silva stated he was jumped by two “cholos” (meaning gangbangers).  A computer check of Silva’s name turned up an alias and an active arrest warrant.

August 10, 2007, 5:32 PM
The manager of a business office in the 6900 block of Windsor called police when a fired worker refused to leave the premises.  The worker, 26-year-old Teresa L. Avila of Cicero, had come to collect her check, which was not ready for her because of a problem with the hours, according to the manager.  Avila was asked many times to leave but would not, so police were summoned.  While police were present, Avila’s mother—Teresa S. Avila, 49, of Lyons—walked up to the manager in a threatening manner and made threatening statements.  Both Avilas resisted three police commands to leave, so they were arrested.  The elder Avila hit an officer in the face in her struggle to resist handcuffs.  The younger Avila grabbed the arm of the officer handcuffing her mom.  Teresa L. Avila was charged with trespassing and obstructing an officer.  Teresa S. Avila was charged with trespassing and assault.
