VALENTINE’S DAY MOB ACTION, BATTERY

February 14, 2008, 8:24 PM
Five Berwyn police officers helped North Riverside police break up a fight involving 40-50 people that started at the food court of North Riverside mall.* According to Berwyn police, several other suburban departments were required to take control of the scene, and the disorder spread as people were ordered to leave; a second group fight broke out soon after near Best Buy, further east.  A Berwyn police lieutenant saw people in a vehicle throwing beer bottles at people in a second vehicle.  The bottle-throwing group was threatening to get a gun and “light up” the other vehicle, so the officer made a felony traffic stop.  That arrest was turned over to North Riverside police.  During the arrest, a Chicago woman shoved the lieutenant in the back as she tried to walk past him.  She was arrested.  As a female officer was handcuffing 17-year-old Stephaine C. Curney [sic, per incident report], of the 1100 block of west 13th, Chicago, a male teen approached the officer from behind, grabbed her by the shoulder and tried to pull her away from the prisoner. At this, the watch commander grabbed 17-year-old Antuan Y. Kelley, of the 5500 block of west Congress, Chicago, and arrested him too.  Curney and Kelley were each charged with one count of battery.

Strangers flee in SUV after argument inside (and battery outside) Garv’s

February 9, 2008, 2:48 AM
A passerby’s call told police a man had been hit with a brick outside Garv’s, 6548 Windsor.  Police met with the victim, a man from the 3200 block of Highland, and bar manager Joseph M. Loisi, 27, of Cicero.  Police characterized Loisi as “intoxicated, uncooperative and evasive”.  Asked why he did not call police or paramedics, Loisi initially told police he was “just a bartender, not a manger.” Loisi added that he did not have to call the cops because the victim was hit outside the bar.  He also stated that he did not know what was going on and did not have to know, because it took place outside.  Loisi was cited for failure to notify police, and also received a ticket because police did not have a clear view from outside of liquor sales in the bar.  The victim was treated at MacNeal Hospital.  He said he got into an argument with two men inside Garv’s; he said the taller of the pair hit him in the head with a brick or a bottle.  Th offenders fled the scene in a beige GMC SUV.  The victim said the men were both Hispanic, ages 20-25; one was 5’10” with long brown hair, the other only 5’5”.  He said they told him they were from Saginaw, Michigan.

“So you like hitting women?”

February 4, 2008, 2:25 AM
An 18-year-old man from the 6200 block of 21st told police three men entered his apartment and punched him. When officers arrived at the man’s apartment, he appeared intoxicated.  The alleged victim told police he and his female roommate had attended an underage drinking party in Riverside.  Afterward, he said, they went to White Castle, where he insulted the woman. He said he thought that because of the insult, the woman invited three men to their shared apartment to batter him, while a female friend of hers watched. The victim refused medical treatment initially; police saw some red marks near his left eye.
Once at the police station, the man’s story changed.  He said a fourth man was present at the alleged battering, and the female observer was not there after all.  Later, he said he lost consciousness after the encounter.
After an officer told the man and his mother that someone would be charged with misdemeanor battery in the case, the mother objected, stating she could not believe four men could break into her son’s apartment, drag him out of bed and not be charged with felonies.  The officer was obliged to point out to the mother that it was not regarded as a break-in, since the female roommate is believed to have allowed the men inside, and also that at no time did the alleged victim say anything to police about “four men dragging him out of bed.”
The female companion of the victim’s roommate told police not only did the victim call his roommate a “fatass”, he also pulled her hair and punched her more than once in the head.  She said he did this as he drove, causing him to run up over the curb at 21st and Lombard.
The victim’s roommate also told police the victim hit her in the head as he drove his black Saab, slamming her head against the window in the process.  Once they reached their apartment, she said she made a remark to the effect that his deceased father should have raised him not to hit girls, inspiring him to punch her in the face.
One of the men interviewed by police stated he got a call from the woman roommate, who was in tears and in need of a ride.  He said he and
some friends arrived to pick her up, entering the door opened by the woman.  One of the men told the victim, “I can’t believe you hit a girl”; another reportedly said, “So you like hitting women?”, then a couple of the men punched him.  The witness stated he believed the victim got what he deserved.
Witnesses stated the encounter lasted about three minutes.  The accused men, ages 18, 19 and 20, are all Berwyn residents.

Battered at White Castle

February 2, 2008, 5:24 AM
Two women flagged down a police officer in the 3400 block of Harlem; one said her boyfriend hit her in the face.  The victim said she went clubbing with a female friend and her boyfriend, who got drunk.  The victim was driving the three in an SUV.  They pulled into the lot at White Castle, Ogden and Harlem, and the women went inside to eat.  The man stated he would stay in the SUV.  But instead, he came into the restaurant as the women were eating, yelled at the girlfriend, and smacked her multiple times on the face and head as she walked back to the SUV.  Police found the man, reeking of alcohol, walking on Harlem.  An already-existing complaint of domestic battery, signed by the girlfriend, was found during a search of the man’s name.  He also had an active arrest warrant out of Chicago.  Police arrested him and processed him for both.

Assault charge, warrant discovery, follow fight over money

January 29, 2008, 11:04 PM
Police responded to a disturbance in a house at 15th and Grove, where they encountered an intoxicated 26-year-old man.  The man began to tell police about the incident, but between his intoxication and the fact that his jaw was partially wired shut, not much information was exchanged.  The victim, a paraplegic living in the same home, said the offender started an argument about the household bills, swore, and came at the victim with a kitchen knife.  The offender was charged with aggravated assault; a check of his name also revealed a Cook County arrest warrant for aggravated assault, dated last November 30.
