Joggers shot with paintball gun

July 22, 2010, 8:52 PM
Two joggers flagged down an officer at 27th and Kenilworth to report they were shot multiple times by someone in a dark older vehicle occupied by several men.  Red/orange paintball marks stained the victims’ clothing.  After a car, answering the victims’ description, was seen blowing the stop sign at 27th and Wenonah, it was curbed by police.  It was occupied by four men—one with red/orange paint stains on his face and hands.  The driver consented to a search of the trunk, in which police found a paintball gun with red/orange paint residue.  Police arrested driver David E. Maisonet, 19, of the 1400 block of Ridgeland; Noel Rivera, 19, of Lyons; Daniel Martinez, 19, of the 2700 block of Lombard, and Jose Rivera, 18, of the 2700 block of Grove.  The car, a Corolla, was impounded.

After the arrestees were placed in cells, booking officers reported hearing the men laughing and joking about shooting the victims.  All four men were charged with two counts of battery, two counts of criminal damage to property, and reckless conduct.  In addition, the driver was charged with disregarding a stop sign.  Police photographed the victims’ injuries.

Felony charge answers the question “What, I can’t kill my own dog?”

June 20, 2010, 8:05 AM
Shocked anonymous callers told police a man had just shot his dog and dumped it in a trash can in the 6600 block of 34th.  Police spoke with witnesses who said the offender had been drinking alcohol at a neighbor’s house.  They said he then walked home, killed his own dog, threw its body in a garbage can in the alley and announced the deed to neighbors.

The offender’s female roommate told police he had a gun and led them to the basement, where they recovered a .177 pellet-shooting air rifle. When tactical cops asked the offender if he had other guns, he reportedly said, ‘Yeah, I got a shotgun in pieces upstairs, but I didn’t shoot my dog.  I killed it with a bat.  I hit it in the head with a f@&#ing bat.”

Police recovered the body of the dog—a black 14-year-old female named “Shakes”—from the trash can in the rear of 3329 Wesley.  When police handcuffed Paul A. Canlas, 43, of 3333 Wesley, he reportedly said, “It was my dog.  What, I can’t kill my own dog?”

Canlas had a valid FOID card, but his roommate did not.  She told police she did not intend to allow him to return and wished the guns removed from the premises.  Police recovered the air rifle and a Norinco 12-gauge shotgun, along with the wooden baseball bat.

Canlas waived his Miranda rights; he reportedly told detectives he had been out of work for nine months and had been drinking at a friend’s place when he decided to kill the dog because it was “old and sick”.  He allegedly said he went home, led his dog into his garage and smashed her over the head with a baseball bat.  Canlas reportedly stated he thought the first blow killed the dog, but he delivered a second blow to make sure.

The assistant state’s attorney gave felony approval at 10:18 PM.  Canlas was charged with one felony count of aggravated cruelty to an animal, with a court date of Wednesday, June 23rd at 9:00 AM in courtroom #103 at Maybrook courthouse.  The charge is a Class 4 felony.*

Boots & brain:  store separately

January 6, 2010, 6:11 PM
A 34-yar-old beating victim told police that, on New Year’s Eve, he was playing pool at Guadalajara restaurant on Cermak with a man he knew only as “Flaco”.  After the game, five friends of “Flaco” entered the bar and invited the victim to travel with them to a second bar in Cicero.  The group traveled in a newer Cadillac SUV to a place called “Isabella’s” on Central.  There they stayed until 1 AM, when they left in the SUV.  “Flaco” got out of the SUV after a few blocks, leaving in a second vehicle.  The victim and the five men remained in the Cadillac, headed for the victim’s home in the 1900 block of Clinton.  An argument began, and at 21st and Clinton, the driver stopped the SUV and pulled the victim outside.  The five men—all wearing cowboy or work boots—began to punch and kick the victim’s entire body.  After the beating, the offenders fled in the Cadillac.  The victim went to MacNeal hospital, where it was determined he had a brain injury; he was not released from the hospital until January 6th.  He told police he can identify the offenders.
