Residential and vehicular burglaries
June 24, 2008, 7:28 AM
A resident of an apartment building in the 6300 block of 33rd St. found an air-conditioning unit—still running—lying in the backyard by the window of a basement apartment. The tenant was notified and reported stolen a computer and a 42” Sony TV.
2:50 PM
A delivery truck driver made a delivery in the 2400 block of Lombard, and reported his truck burglarized. He told police he saw two men enter his truck, take his $400 Tom Tom GPS unit, and flee southbound in a blue sedan. The victim described the offenders as two male Hispanics, slim, ages 18 to 20; one had shoulder-length black hair.

A tape recorder and a wallet containing ID and credit cards were reported stolen from a Ford Explorer in the rear of the 6200 block of 26th. The SUV’s windows were rolled down, and it was unoccupied and unlocked. The victim told police he only left for twenty seconds.

Someone entered a garage in the 2600 block of Cuyler, got into a Chevy Malibu, and stole its stereo.

A man in the 3800 block of Wisconsin came home to find his back door forced open. Missing items included a circular saw, a cordless drill and a drill-bit set.
Hoodied suspect seen leaving burglarized taco joint

Police responding to the burglar alarm at Zacatacos, 6224 Cermak, found the front glass door broken. A witness told officers he saw a man exit the restaurant and flee northbound on foot; the witness described the suspect as a male Hispanic in his late teens, in a black hoodie and jeans, with a white “Ace"-type bandage on his right knee over his pants.
The offender pried open the cash register and damaged the officer door, apparently with a hammer.
Berwyn men arrested in Brookfield, Riverside for robbery, burglary

Berwyn resident Juan M. Hernandez, 19, faces a robbery charge after he allegedly held up the Mobil gas station at 9137 Ogden Ave. in Brookfield just after midnight on June 9.
According to police, Hernandez approached the clerk to purchase a bag of chips, but did not have enough money, sparking an argument with the clerk. Hernandez then allegedly reached over the counter into the cash drawer, initiating a struggle between the two. Hernandez fled the store with roughly $40, police said, but the event was captured on a surveillance camera.
During the subsequent investigation, an officer learned of a large outdoor party at a home in the 4000 block of Oak Avenue, which led to the naming of Hernandez as a suspect. He surrendered to police on June 12. He is free on bond.
Burglary
Riverside police charged Berwyn resident Raul Mendez, 19, with burglary after he was identified as one of three men allegedly rifling through a 2004 Nissan Sentra parked in the driveway of a home in the 200 block of Lawton Avenue just after 4:30 a.m. on June 23.
According to the police report, the victim heard a noise outside and found the three men inside the vehicle. The victim yelled at the men, causing them to flee the scene, but the victim gave police descriptions of the men.
A Riverside officer reportedly found Mendez in the 3500 block of Maple Avenue, Berwyn, and gave chase. After apprehending Mendez, police were able to positively identify him as one of the three in the victim’s vehicle. The two other suspects remained at large as of Monday afternoon.

Burglars target cash, electronics and …. dinner plates?

A man told police he came home to the 1800 block of Euclid and was about to fix himself something to eat when he noticed five gold-inlaid plates missing from the cabinet. The plates were there earlier in the day. He said they were worth $250 each, and suspects a previous tenant. Police advised him to get his locks changed.

Someone smashed a window of a Ford pickup truck, parked in the 1200 block of Harlem, and stole a stereo and a GPS unit.

When workers arrived to open a Laundromat in the 6600 block of 26th, they found five coin machines pried open. An estimated $410 was missing.

A Chicago man parked his Chevy Lumina in the 6300 block of Vacin fairway, but returned to find a smashed window. An MP3 player was stolen from the car.

A maintenance man arrived at 12th St. Rag tavern, 6943 Roosevelt, and found the front window broken and the front door pried open. The liquor storage room was also pried open. The owner said $5000 missing, although another $5000 worth of quarters remained untouched.

Someone pried open the service door of a garage in the 2300 block of Harvey, then stole a pressure washer, an angle grinder and three rolls of electrical wire.

In the 1600 block of Wesley, a burglar pried open a door and ransacked the basement of a residence. Missing items included miscellaneous DVDs, a VISA card and $50.
Burglary apparently abandoned after half the neighborhood gets good look at offenders

Police received calls complaining of suspicious men entering a house in the 2800 block of Wenonah. Witnesses said the men did not live there, and the actual residents were not at home. A witness took a picture of the suspicious men’s dark blue Chevy Impala, parked behind the garage, before the men came out and fled northbound in the car. The Impala had tinted front and rear windows, as well as oversize chrome wheels. According to witnesses, the intruders were three male Hispanics in their 20s. The first was said to be 5’9”, stocky, with close-cut hair; the second was 5’8”, 150 lbs, wearing a black hoodie, black backpack and black do-rag. The third, they said, was 6’ and stocky, with shoulder-length dark curly hair; he wore a white T-shirt.
When police spoke with the homeowners, they said a cousin of theirs drives a car matching the above description. A Samsung flat-panel TV—which should have been in the upstairs bedroom—was found near the back door of the house.

Garage tools, porn only get as far as trash can after break-in

A homeowner in the 2600 block of Cuyler reported someone inside his garage. Police met the victim in the alley, where they observed a man coming out from between the victim’s and a neighbor’s garage: Joseph J. Caliendo, 24, of the 2800 block of north Spaulding, Chicago. The service door of the victim’s garage had been kicked in. Shoe prints on that door matched the tread on Caliendo’s size 10.5 FUBU shoes. Caliendo was charged with criminal damage to property. During booking, Caliendo was reportedly uncooperative, aggressively trying to defeat a search, attempting to bite police and moving so violently as to break off the key to the handcuffs he was wearing. Because of this, he was also charged with aggravated assault.
A green trash container in the alley was filled with items removed from the garage; they were retrieved, documented and returned to the victim. The items included a yellow Craftsman toolbox; a Ryobi welder; hedge trimmers, a Skilsaw, a chain saw, an air drill and a car battery charger; and a selection of DVDS with the following titles: “Art of Butt”, “Just Off the Bus”, “New York Nymphomaniacs, Volumes 21 and 4”, and “Ass Pumpers”.

Riverside police arrest two after chasing them into Berwyn

Burglary
Riverside police charged Ohio resident Michael T. Paidousis with burglary after he reportedly broke into a car in the 3200 block of Harlem Avenue on June 6.
Police apprehended Paidousis after a lengthy foot chase that ended at Oak Park Avenue and 31st Street in Berwyn. Paidousis, according to police, has a long criminal history for burglary and was wanted on a warrant for burglary out of Steubenville, Ohio.
He reportedly was taking loose change and minor items from unlocked cars, reportedly admitting to other car burglaries in Berwyn.
Felony DUI
Riverside police charged Cicero resident Luis Y. Huerta-Ortega, 24, with aggravated driving under the influence after an officer reported seeing him driving erratically while eastbound on Ogden Avenue near Harlem Avenue just before 3 a.m. on June 14.
Huerta-Ortega’s Buick reportedly went through a red light, nearly striking another vehicle before police stopped him at Wisconsin Avenue inBerwyn. Police reported finding an open 20-ounce beer can in the car’s center console.
Police also reported that he had been charged with a prior DUI in 2005 and had no valid license. A breath test reportedly revealed his blood-alcohol level to be .131, which is nearly twice the legal limit of .08.

A man in the 1900 block of Wesley reported someone removed glass from his garage windows and stole a Skilsaw, a table saw, three bicycles, a stereo and some hand tools. He told police it was the third burglary of his garage this year. He also alerted police to a nearby residence across the alley which, because it is vacant, attracts teenagers who enter and vandalize the property.

A black mountain bike was stolen from a yard in the 1900 block of Wesley.

A Flossmoor man parked his silver Mercedes in the 3300 block of Oak Park, only to return to find it with a broken window and a stolen GPS unit.

Someone stole a burgundy Chevy Lumina from the 1200 block of Ridgeland.

In the 3200 block of Ridgeland, someone cut the screens off two windows of a residence, then stole a laptop, ransacked a nightstand and rifled a jewelry box. Police obtained fingerprints from a harmonica in the kitchen.
Burglar sets off car alarm

After hearing his car alarm go off, a man in the 1900 block of Ridgeland saw a light on in his garage. Responding police found the service door had been forced and someone had ransacked a Buick SUV parked inside. A GPS was missing and the ignition was damaged.

In the 2200 block of Highland, a burglar broke into a Buick SUV and stole CDs and papers.

Nothing but broken glass remained where a Dodge minivan was once parked. The van was stolen from Vacin Fairway near Highland.

A witness saw a man leaving a neighbor’s garage in the 2800 block of Lombard, so she told the neighbor. The neighbor checked his garage and found he was missing numerous hand and power tools. He also noticed new items in the garage, things that were not there before: they were two baseball caps and a pair of sunglasses. The witness recorded the offender’s license plate; it was registered to a man from the 9600 block of south Ewing, Chicago.
