Garages burgles, car theft try, extensive chase of suspected van ends at Rt. 83

November 12, 2007, 3:26 AM
A man could not pull into his own garage in the 7000 block of 29th Place because there was a white panel van parked in the alley behind his property, so he pulled around and parked in front.  As he did so, he noticed the same van, now heading south on Home.  The man followed the van, which sped up and appeared to be trying to lose him. When the man gave up and went home, he found his garage door lock damaged.  A stereo and dvd player had been stolen from inside the garage.
3:42 AM
At Harlem and Cermak, police stopped a white van matching the above victim’s description; its temporary Illinois plates were listed as stolen from a Chevy Cavalier.  During the computer check of the plates, the van suddenly “blacked out”:  with all its lights turned off, the van fled, speeding as fast as 65 MPH in a 25 MPH zone, running two red lights, and leading police on a long chase onto the Eisenhower expressway, where it sped up to 80 MPH.  Broadview and state police joined the pursuit, which ended with the driver in custody at Rt. 83 and 55th St. The van, which contained various tools, had a peeled steering column, commonly seen in stolen vehicles.  Police reached van’s owner, a Chicago man who signed a complaint against the driver.  Driver Raymond Hernandez, 22, of the 5700 block of south Archer, Chicago, was charged with two separate instances of running red lights; speeding; and driving without headlights. Van passengers included two intoxicated Chicago women and a man either from Chicago or Palatine, depending on who you ask.  The man sported a teardrop tattoo by his left eye and stated his membership in a street gang.  The man refused to elaborate further on the evening’s adventures, because, he said, he was “not a snitch”.  The burglary victim looked at the van, but said it was not the same one he saw.
