Robber can’t get woman to let go of her stuff

December 18, 2008, 11:51 AM
A 49-year-old Brookfield woman said a man tried to rob her in the foyer at Marshall’s, 7163 Cermak.  She saw the man behind her in the checkout line.  As she was leaving the store, the man ran ahead of her. When the two were in the foyer, the man said, “the door seems to be stuck”.  The victim told him to push harder.  Instead, the man turned and grabbed the victim’s necklace.  The victim grabbed it too and struggled to prevent him from stealing it.  The offender then tried to snatch the cell phone clipped to the victim’s jacket, but she kept hold of that, too.  Finally, the robber fled into a green Ford Taurus with a temporary Illinois plate, which was waiting for him outside the store.

The robber was described as a male black in his 30s, 5’10” to 6’, with an unshaven face, a black winter hat and a black puffy jacket with tan fur trimming the hood.  Witnesses confirmed the victim’s account.  The store gave police a digital image of the offender and the incident.

Seis cervezas

December 16, 2008, 1:48 AM
An officer at Ridgeland and Stanley stopped a Plymouth Breeze because of its illegal tinted license plate cover.  When the officer asked the driver to lower his window, the driver just nodded.  The officer then opened the driver’s door to request license and insurance.  The driver offered only a Mexican license.  When asked whether he had an Illinois driver’s license, the driver just nodded again.  A strong odor of alcohol was noticeable on his breath.  A Spanish-speaking officer then asked the driver whether he had been drinking.  In Spanish, he reportedly said, “Yes, I had six beers.” The driver went on to fail multiple field sobriety tests and had a blood alcohol level of .172—more than twice the legal limit for DUI.  The driver gave the name Daniel Martinez, 29, of 2111 59th Ave, Cicero.  However, his fingerprints came back attached to the name “Jose Reyes”, age 33.  Whatever his name, he was charged with four counts aggravated DUI, DUI, DUI with a blood alcohol level over .08, and driving unlicensed and uninsured.

The coppers will kick your ass WITH me!

December 14, 2008
In the wee hours past midnight, a 42-year-old Berwyn man was driving in the 2600 block of Oak Park when his progress was impeded by a silver Chevy Blazer blocking the road.  The Berwyn man honked his horn several times but the Blazer did not make way, so he drove around it.  At this point, the Blazer began to move, following the Berwyn man to Oak Park and 28th.  Both vehicles stopped there, and both drivers exited.  The Blazer driver, an intoxicated male, reportedly told the victim, “I’m gonna kick your ass, and I know all the Berwyn coppers so if you call them they’ll kick your ass with me!” The bellicose Blazer driver them grabbed the victim’s jacket.  The victim managed to get back into his vehicle and flee the scene.

The victim provided the offender’s license plate number to police; it proved to be registered to a couple in the 3900 block of Clarence in Stickney.

Tussle involves hairpulling, but not the way you’d think

December 10, 2008, 4:56 PM
Police were dispatched to Beauty Mart, 7107 Roosevelt Rd, on reports two women were fighting inside. A tactical officer arrested them; one woman had in her possession two packages containing “Milky Way 100% Human Hair” inside a bag.

The owner, a Palatine man, said his wife told him a woman was trying to distract her while a second woman went about concealing packaged hair in her bag. Both women left the store, but the owner chased them, grabbed the suspect’s bag and pulled; since the woman would not let go, this caused her to be dragged back into the store, where she began to fight the owner.  The woman reportedly bit the owner several times on the back and also shoved him in the chest.  The other woman did not participate, but did come back inside the store when her companion did.

Ashley D. Lambirth, 22, of 1913 east 22nd, Broadview, was charged with theft and battery.  Caress S. Williams, 22, of 1126 Elgin, Forest Park, was not charged with anything by Berwyn police.  Williams, however, was found to have an active arrest warrant for retail theft out of Chicago, and was accordingly processed.

Left behind

December 10, 2008, 8:02 AM
An officer stopped a green Infiniti in the 1500 block of Oak Park after noticing its expired temporary plate.  Driver Precious N. Willis, 20, of 1826 Grove, had no license or insurance.  Her car was impounded and she was driven to the police station in squad car #121.  Once Willis was in the booking room, police checked car #121; in the area where Willis had sat was a plastic baggie containing eleven bags of marijuana, for a total weight of 8.8 grams.  The squad car contained no marijuana at the beginning of the patrol shift, about half an hour earlier, and Willis was the only person to occupy the back seat since that time.  She was charged with possession of marijuana, and also received tickets for driving unlicensed, uninsured and with expired registration.

Delusional dude darkens door once too often

December 9, 2008, 12:37 AM
A caller reported a suspicious person on the porch of a residence in the 2100 block of Ridgeland.  Police saw a man on the porch and asked him what he was doing.  The man said he was going into his house.  He had a key ring with two keys, one of which he was attempting to use on the screen door lock.  He claimed he “built the house” years ago, but had not lived in it for a few years while he was away in the National Guard.  He also said he takes Risperdal* because of an injury sustained in Vietnam.

Police spoke with a witness who said the man had appeared on the block in the past, and also that the home’s owner had asked neighbors to call if they saw the man in the area.  The man—a 55-year-old resident of the 2200 block of south Avers, Chicago—was taken to the hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

*Risperdal is an anti-psychotic used for schizophrenia, among other things.

Robber snatches chain off woman’s neck

December 9, 2008, 11:52 AM
A 60-year-old Cicero woman told police she was walking to her car, parked by Walgreen’s in Cermak Plaza, when a man approached.  The man said “you look like you need help with those packages.” The victim said that she did not need help; at that, the man grabbed the gold rope chain she wore around her neck and ran off.

The robber was described as a male black, 5’6” or 7”, thin, wearing jeans, a dark shirt and a black leather jacket.  He ran to a silver Daewoo two-door hatchback with a temporary plate, driven by a second male black; the car left the scene.

Drunken sheriff’s employee found on sidewalk

December 5, 2008, 11:34 PM
A man called police to report a woman lying on the ground.  Police came to the 6200 block of Cermak and found a 60-year-old woman lying on the sidewalk; they assisted her up onto a bench.  The woman, a resident of the 2300 block of Gunderson, stated she had been drinking. She had visible injuries to her eye and mouth from the fall.  A 44-year-old man approached police at the scene and said he was the woman’s friend.  They had been out together at a Cicero establishment, but when he went to the bathroom, she walked out.  The man told police the woman was employed by the Cook County sheriff’s department.  Police asked whether she was carrying a department-issued firearm, but she wasn’t.

Marry her and you’ll have only yourself to blame

December 5, 2008, 11:13 AM
Police were sent to the 3700 block of Wesley on reports a woman had set herself on fire.  Officers met with a 36-year-old man at the scene.  The man said he was moving out because of an argument with his 39-year-old “fiancée”.  But, as he tried to leave their shared residence, the woman lit her long black skirt on fire.  The woman told police she did it to “get his attention”; she apparently believed they were going to be getting married later in the month.  She was taken to MacNeal hospital to be evaluated.

Western Springs-owned Pontiac hits house, takes off; teen driver suspected

December 5, 2008, 6:43 PM
A property owner in the 1500 block of Gunderson showed police the damage left behind after a Pontiac Grand Prix hit his house.  Bushes were ripped from the ground and there was damage to the bricks.  A piece of a white bumper was left behind.  A witness told police he saw the white Pontiac flee north through the 1400 block of Gunderson/Elmwood alley.  Police located the Pontiac—still hot, and parked but unoccupied—in front of 1246 Elmwood.  The Pontiac was registered to the 4400 block of Clausen, Western Springs.  Police called the owners to ask in whose possession their car was supposed to be:  the answer was their 17-year-old daughter. Police informed the teen’s mom of the hit and run.  The mom called police back to say she spoke to the teen, who denied being in an accident.  Police restated what happened.  An additional report explaining what happened next (and, one can only hope, including some sort of punishment for irresponsible driving) was missing from those made available this week.
