September 27, 2007, 11:31 PM
Workers at La Aduana bar, 6736 Cermak, told police a man in jeans and a white shirt threw something through a rear window, and was last seen at 19th and Euclid. The responding officer drove to that intersection, heard yelling in the alley, saw a man matching the offender’s description, and got out to speak with him. The man ran toward a house in the 1900 block of Oak Park. The officer chased him, but was confronted by a growling white pitbull and two other men in the gangway of the Oak Park residence. The officer advised the men to call off the dog or he would be forced to shoot it. The suspect called the dog to him, then fled inside the building. One of the other men told the officer that was his brother, 27-year-old Russell J. Riddiford, and he would let the officer into the apartment. Riddiford apologized, explaining he ran because he thought he had a warrant. The officer took Riddiford back to La Aduana, where the owner said he was not the man described. Riddiford did, however, have an active arrest warrant out of Chicago.
