Dog chained without food or water, owner uncooperative

October 2, 2007, 10:45 AM
Police came to the 1300 block of Clinton to check out complaints of a dog locked in a garage that had been barking for two days.  Police and fire personnel found the pitbull/mastiff-mix dog, chained and locked inside the garage, barking violently.  A look through the window showed the dog had no food, water or ventilation; a large amount of dog feces littered the garage floor. Firemen were able to get into the garage and rescue the dog, which was taken to A-American for safekeeping.  The house was in the process of being sold, and appeared vacant.  Police called the realtor, Claudia Valdovinos, who stated she had the owner’s number but would not give it to police.  Eventually, police received a call from the owner, Octavio Padilla, 30.  Police described Padilla was irate and uncooperative; he reportedly told them he was going to sue the department.  The animal-cruelty investigation continues.

Husky on walk with owner attacked by loose pitbull

September 29, 2007, 8:23 PM
Callers reported a man hitting a dog with a bat in the 2100 block of Kenilworth.  Three officers came and found the man with the bat, who explained he was trying to stop a pitbull that was attacking a dog.  He said a woman was walking her Husky on the east side of the street when a pitbull came up and began biting the Husky.  The witness said he ran up and hit the attacking dog’s neck to make it stop.  The Husky ran away northbound, he said, with its owner chasing it; the pitbull ran into a gangway.  As they spoke, 23-year-old Ricardo Martinez of that block approached and told police he is the owner of the pitbull, which is five months old.  He said the pitbull must have broken its chain.  Martinez was cited for having a dog at large, and has a court date at the police station of October 11 at 3 PM.

Growling pitbull confronts cop during chase

September 27, 2007, 11:31 PM
Workers at La Aduana bar, 6736 Cermak, told police a man in jeans and a white shirt threw something through a rear window, and was last seen at 19th and Euclid.  The responding officer drove to that intersection, heard yelling in the alley, saw a man matching the offender’s description, and got out to speak with him.  The man ran toward a house in the 1900 block of Oak Park.  The officer chased him, but was confronted by a growling white pitbull and two other men in the gangway of the Oak Park residence. The officer advised the men to call off the dog or he would be forced to shoot it.  The suspect called the dog to him, then fled inside the building.  One of the other men told the officer that was his brother, 27-year-old Russell J. Riddiford, and he would let the officer into the apartment.  Riddiford apologized, explaining he ran because he thought he had a warrant. The officer took Riddiford back to La Aduana, where the owner said he was not the man described. Riddiford did, however, have an active arrest warrant out of Chicago.
