EYENET: new police technology pays for itself right away
May 16, 2008
A new device used by the Berwyn police department to instantly read license plates—and compare them to a list of people with five more more unpaid city tickets—made its debut here at the beginning of the month, according to police chief William Kushner. Right now, just one police car is equipped with an EYENET unit, which cost $10,000.
On May 1st, 2008, it captured $7800 in revenue in its first 8 hours of use. The device locates cars eligible for a wheel lock or “boot” much faster than eyes alone, and enables the city to zero in on ticket scofflaws in a timely manner.
EYENET can be also be used by sworn police officers to locate stolen vehicles and vehicles wanted in connection with crimes, increasing the speed and efficiency of the process.

Wanted for desertion
May 13, 2008, 12:13 AM
An officer noticed an older white Cadillac Fleetwood because it was not running, just sitting, in the “thruway”—not a designated parking spot—at White Castle, 7155 Ogden. The driver appeared to be slumped down. When approached, the driver told the officer the Caddy ran out of gas and he was just waiting for a friend—a 22-year-old Lyons man—to come back with some fuel for it. Police checked the name of driver Andre D. Cannon, 22, of New Orleans, Louisiana; there was an active “military desertion” warrant in his name from the United States Navy. Cannon was taken into custody and police alerted the Navy investigator to his presence.

May 10, 2008, 3:11 AM

While police examined the Cadillac, the driver showed up. Edgar J. Sierra, 21, of Blue Island, initially told police someone tried to carjack him and that caused the crash. But later, Sierra changed his story, stating there had in fact been no carjack attempt; he just fled the scene out of fear. He was charged with failure to give information after an accident.

Thick black smoke sign of problem
My 9, 2008, 1:22 AM
An officer saw thick black smoke coming from the chimney of a house in the 1300 block of East. When police and fire fighters arrived, the resident—a 43-year-old woman who spoke very little English—indicated to them that all was well. But police attempting to check the furnace encountered extreme heat throughout the basement. The source was a wood-burning stove, installed very close to a basement wall—so close, in fact, that the paint was peeling off the wall. Firemen had to open the wall to ensure there was no fire inside it, and told police and the resident that if the stove had been permitted to burn another 30 minutes, the wall would have begun to burn. The daughter of the residents, translating for the woman, said her father had installed the stove three years earlier. She said they use the stove for heat because gas is expensive. Unfortunately, the fuel they were burning consisted of scraps of laminated wood.*
The residents were advised against using the stove until it could be properly installed.
* “NEVER burn household wastes such as plastics, color newsprint, diapers, magazines, packaging materials, coated or laminated papers, or painted or treated wood in residential stoves or fireplaces. When burned, these products produce smoke, odors, and release toxic fumes, and the remaining ash may be hazardous. Only dry, untreated wood is acceptable to burn.”
