What not to do in a courtroom
July 22, 2010, 2:16 PM
While in local ordinance court, a man was issued a fine on a ticket. After receiving the fine, the man reportedly walked to the rear of the courtroom—which is part of the police station—and began to yell “All you guys are b!+ch@$!”, then slammed the door, causing a disturbance in the lobby. Officers ran outside after Mark A. Mercado*, of the 6300 block of 28th. They found him inside a business in the 3000 block of Ridgeland; the business owner signed a trespassing complaint. Mercado was charged with disorderly conduct and criminal trespass.

Basement-crasher
May 12, 2010, 4:50 PM
A man who lacked permission to be in a building in the 2100 block of Wenonah was found asleep in the basement. Police, upon entering the basement, saw legs protruding from a blanket on a bed; they belonged to Edgar M. Gomez, 48, of the 2000 block of south Leavitt, Chicago. Next to the bed officers saw empty cans of Milwaukee’s Best beer. The building’s landlord reportedly told police Gomez was arrested the previous year for the same offense, and stated the judge had told him never to return. Fresh damage, apparently made by brute force, was seen on the basement door. Gomez was charged with criminal damage to property and criminal trespassing.

Illegal flat found during beer-soaked disturbance
June 27, 2007, 8:08 AM
Concerned citizens alerted police to a group of people trespassing in the 2200 block of East and leaving yard gates open. When police arrived, there were empty beer bars and bottles lying in front of the residence, as well as in the street, on the south side of the building and in the back yard. A group of people showed up at that point, carrying more cartons of beer. Officers advised them to pick up the debris, which the group admitted to strewing about the property. Two females and a male, however, grew uncooperative and were arrested for disorderly conduct.
The report noted “numerous blight conditions”, “numerous people living inside” the building, and an illegal basement apartment. The watch commander notified a city compliance inspector of the illegal flat and the blight.
Homeowner Mere Gomez, 52, was charged with use of premises to disturb the peace. Charges of public intoxication were made against Robert C. Nunez, 24, of 2235 East; Brittany Miller, 20, of Cicero; and Cynthia Patino, 20, of Cicero.

Burglary: “staying out of trouble”?
May 15, 2009, 12:59 PM
A man in the 2500 block of Harvey told police he was asleep in the basement when he heard someone above him on the first floor—even though he was supposed to be the only one home. The man walked outside, looked through the front door, saw an unknown male in his living room, and called 911. When police arrived, the intruder fled out the rear door, jumping fences northward in an effort to elude capture.
Police caught him anyway. He was positively identified by the victim as the intruder. A search of the prisoner’s pockets recovered a digital camera, a Seiko watch, a cell phone, $1 bill and a rosary; the victim identified the cell phone and rosary as his, as well as a laptop computer thrown over a fence during the chase. Other items discarded nearby were a jacket and a backpack. The backpack contained a bag of coins, a video game, a CD, a camera and an Ipod and docking station.
During the ride to the police station, suspect Diamond O. Melton, 18,* of the 2100 block of Harvey, talked “incessantly”, according to the report of the officer driving the squad car. The officer said Melton stated he was with a juvenile male known only as “T”, and that he was “not going down” and intended to tell everything to anyone who wants to ask him. Melton allegedly also stated he had been “staying out of trouble” and wanted to telephone his parole officer.**
The assistant state’s attorney approved a charge against Melton of felony residential burglary.

Drive-thru dispute spills into Burger King
January 21, 2009, 12:28 PM
Seven cops responded when someone at Burger King hit the panic alarm and numerous 911 calls came in at the same time. At the scene, 2147 Oak Park, police spoke with a man and woman who expressed dissatisfaction with the service they received in the Burger King drive-thru lane. The man told police that not only was the dispute unresolved, but he was offended when the manager allegedly ended the dispute by gesturing with his middle finger. The customer said he therefore parked his car and went inside the restaurant, where the manager allegedly grabbed him.
The 21-year-old manager told police the drive-thru attendant reported a problem with a customer over a coupon. The manager said he tried to reason with the customer but grew frustrated because the man was angrily swearing and yelling. When the customer reportedly made offensive remarks about the manager’s mother, the manager, said, he did indeed flip him off. A minute later, the manager said the customer entered the restaurant, still screaming and swearing; he tried to enter the kitchen, but employees held the door against him.
Multiple witnesses including Burger King employees and customers—reported the man, Adrian M. Covarubbias, 30, of 6419 18th, was very agitated; the witnesses said he and his female companion both yelled, swore and aimed racial remarks at Burger King workers. Covarubbias was charged with battery, disorderly conduct and criminal trespass. Blanca Najera, 46, of 6408 18th, was charged with disorderly conduct. The vehicle in which they arrived was impounded.

Property owner bamboozled by roommate, homeless guy
December 3, 2008, 4:46 PM
In the 6800 block of 26th St., a 73-year-old Berwyn business owner* told police his garage light was on when it shouldn’t be, adding that he was having trouble with a 27-year-old man who keeps breaking in. The garage door was visibly damaged; police heard someone inside and ordered him to come out. The offender crawled out from under the overhead garage door. The complainant identified him as having worked for him in the past.
The offender told police he is homeless and sometimes stays with a friend of his—a man who lives with the property owner. This man reportedly washes the offender’s clothing and lets him use the property owner’s shower. Since the property owner has banned the offender from the property, his roommate lets the offender in when the older man is not home. At one point, following his arrest, the offender was taken to MacNeal hospital for evaluation after making suicidal remarks.
*This is not the first police incident involving this complainant and a homeless man:

Beating, theft reported in 16th St. home invasion
October 21, 2008, 12:07 AM
A home invasion was reported in an apartment behind a business in the 6400 block of 16th. The victim, a 20-year-old man from the 1500 block of Elmwood, just behind the scene of the crime, was bleeding from the head and his right eye was swollen.
The victim, whose father owns the business, told police he went to the apartment around 11 PM to play on the Internet. He said he unlocked the door, shut the door behind him and went up one stairstep when he was struck from behind and fell face-first onto the stairs.
The victim said the attackers were three males—two older and one a teen, judging by their voices—dressed in black and wearing masks, possibly the “Scream” type. They wore yellow dishwashing gloves. The victim said he was struck in the face with two handguns, which may not have been real. One intruder had a knife and there was a screwdriver also. The attackers tied his hands behind him. Two of them spent 20-30 minutes looking through the apartment while the third stayed holding a knife to the victim’s back. As the intruders left the scene, the victim said, one pointed a gun at him and told him not to call police or they would return to “light the place up.” Items stolen by the masked men included the victim’s cell phone and gym shoes, two laptops, a PS3 and a Wii. The victim freed himself after they left, ran home and woke his family.
Police viewed surveillance video of the outside of the building and could see men entering the building, then leaving carrying away property.

Caught with the goods
October 18, 2008, 8:29 AM
A caller reported a man in a black skullcap and sweatshirt, carrying a black briefcase with a strap, was looking into/trying the doors of various vehicles in the 3100 block of Wenonah. Police approached a man matching the description at 30th and Kenilworth. When Nicholas J. Gonzales, of 7132 west 32nd, was asked what he was doing, he said he had stopped at a car he thought belonged to his mom, realized his mistake and kept walking.
The caller, however, told police the man had entered a silver SUV; she had confronted the man because she knew the car belonged to a neighbor and not the intruder. Gonzales was arrested. After being read his Miranda rights, he insisted that he was just looking for his mom’s SUV. When asked why mom’s vehicle would be parked four blocks away from mom’s home, however, he had no answer.
The briefcase Gonzalez carried contained papers, including two bills, in the name of a man in the 3200 block of Wisconsin, as well as a Dell laptop computer Gonzalez claimed belonged to his girlfriend. When police powered up the laptop, the name prompted was the same as the one on the bills. The bag also contained a cell phone and chargers for the phone and laptop.
Police contacted the Wisconsin Ave. man, who told them he had found doors to both his vehicles ajar and his briefcase missing. He said the briefcase contained his Dell laptop and his wife’s cell phone.
Gonzales was charged with felony auto burglary and felony theft/possession of stolen property.
