Some punk’s idea of a prank
September 12, 12:04 PM
A caller told police a man in a car on Ridgeland was pointing what looked like a gun at passersby. Two officers made a felony stop of a white Honda in the 2200 block of Ridgeland, and the witness positively identified an 18-year-old man from the 2200 block of Grove as the one she saw. The witness stated she saw the car travel northbound in the 3000 block of Ridgeland, then saw the man, wearing a sweatshirt with the hood up, point something out the window toward people on the sidewalk, so she called police. No gun was found in the car or on its occupants.
At first the man denied everything. Later, he admitted pointing his cell phone out the window as if it were a gun. He characterized his actions as “a prank.”

Trashpicker picks fight with cop
September 12, 2007, 8:27 AM
An officer driving westbound on 27th noticed a woman tipping over trashbins in the Grove/Kenilworth alley; she was taking beer cans and metal and placing them in a shopping cart. The officer recognized the man from many complaints over the summer. Residents objected to her opening the plastic trash bags in their bins, searching for items of interest, then leaving the bags open and trash lying in the alley or behind apartment buildings. The 60-year-old woman, a resident of the 2700 block of East, had been warned many times to cease and desist. At one point, she got a local ordinance ticket, but failed to appear in court. With this in mind, the officer approached the woman. She became belligerent and attempted to punch the officer in the face. He got her right hand cuffed but she pulled away and backup was required to subdue her. The woman was arrested for illegal garbage collecting and assault.

Sex offender gets felony count for registry failure
September 11, 2007, 3:37 AM
A caller reported seeing three suspicious men in a maroon van at 21st and Oak Park. The caller said the men pulled up beside his vehicle and asked for cigarettes. He got scared because he thought they threw gang signs at him, so he drove away and called police. Officers checking the area located a maroon Astro van containing three men. They told police they did stop and ask a man for a cigarette, but he just drove away. All three men maintained they did not throw gang signs and said none of them belonged to a gang. All three had records clean of gang cautions and so were sent on their way. Then the computer turned up a Cook County warrant for one of the three men—a 37-year-old from the 1900 block of Gunderson; he had failed to register as a sex offender. He was taken into custody for the warrant. The man told police he used to live in the 3200 block of Lombard, then went to Cook County jail two months ago; while, there, his wife and family moved to the Gunderson address. He got out of jail just two weeks ago, he said, and tried to register with police but was told the Gunderson location was too close to a park. He was charge with one felony count of failure to register as a sex offender, as well as not having his driver’s license on his person. failure to notify the secretary of state of an address change, and having no current Berwyn city sticker on his vehicle.

Circus protestors cooperative; exception wore ears, tail
September 6, 2007, 3:42 PM
Police were dispatched to Janura Park, scene of a performance by a traveling circus, after patrons complained about signs held by protestors. Officers explained the disruption complaint to the demonstrators. Police escorted the anti-cruelty protestors to an area on the south side of the street, facing the space reserved by the performers, and told them they were free to peacefully demonstrate, but could not enter the immediate area where the performance was held. Officers then positioned themselves half-way between demonstrators and circus.
One female protestor, wearing cat ears and a makeshift tail pinned to the rear of her pants, repeatedly defied police instructions to remain in the designated demonstration area. The woman, 37-year-old Teresa Chiliz of Joliet, was advised several times to keep her large “STOP ELEPHANT ABUSE” and “DON’T BUY FUR” sign inside that area, but did not. She was arrested. Chiliz reportedly resisted arrest, requiring more than one officer to handcuff her and place her in the squad car. At the station, police found she no longer had both hands restrained behind her back, but had gotten one hand free. She told them she wanted to answer her phone, so she forced her hand out of the cuff. She was recuffed, the redness and scratches were photographed, and she refused medical treatment for the self-inflicted wounds. Chiliz was cited for obstruction and resisting arrest. The sign was placed into evidence.

Gangbanger’s serendipitous appearance draws cop’s attention to alley peace-breachers
September 6, 2007, 2:55 PM
A police sergeant checking Lincoln Middle School—6432 West 16th—prior to dismissal, recognized a tattooed man, known to him as a street gang member, standing in front of Ace of Fades barbershop, 6413 16th ( http://www.aceoffades.com )
As the officer drove past the place, he saw a baseball fly out of the alley behind the shop and hit a vehicle traveling east on 16th. The ball bounced off the first car and hit the police officer’s car, striking the driver side door. The gangbanger fled the scene.
The sergeant pulled into the alley behind the barbershop, where he found two men, both employed by Ace of Fades. Both men were frisked. The search of one man, 25-year-old Adam Hadjis of the 200 block of north LeClaire, Chicago, recovered both a bag of marijuana and an 8-inch-long black switchblade knife with a 3 and 3/8 inch blade—a weapon illegal to possess or carry in Illinois.
The second man, Camillo Anaya, 18, of Downers Grove, was charged with disorderly conduct. Police described barbershop owner Rafael Pellot, 40, as “uncooperative”; they said he has been warned repeatedly about similar activity. This time, he received a citation for use of the premises to disturb the peace.
The misdemeanor court date for Hadjis is Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 9 AM in courtroom 101, 1500 Maybrook Dr, Maywood.
Anaya and Pellot have a local ordinance court date of Thursday, Sept. 20, at 3 PM in the community room of the police station, 6401 W. 31st, Berwyn.

Citizen alerts police to suspicious male on Home
August 28, 2007, 2:38 PM
A caller told police a man was following an elderly woman north on Home from 18th. An officer came and saw a man walking north behind an 86-year-old woman with a shoulder bag; he stopped when he noticed police. A second officer approached the woman, who had been unaware of the man behind her, and she got home safely. A witness reported seeing the man walk north along the parkway of Home, look into each parked car, then start following the woman. The witness feared he was about to see a purse-snatching, so he called police. An officer stopped the man, 17-year-old Anthony J. Wilson of Maywood. Wilson explained his presence by saying his cousin dropped him off to visit a friend in the 1800 block of Home, but the friend was not there. Wilson stated he was not doing anything wrong, also repeating several times, “What the f---?” and “What the f--- is this?”. He carried no ID and had to be identified by his fingerprints. He was cited for disorderly conduct.
