Suspicious-person stop seemed promising at first
January 26, 2008, 3:21 AM
Police noticed a man walking down the street dressed entirely in black, with a black bandanna over his mouth. The man identified himself; a computer check of his name revealed he is a member of a notorious Chicago street gang. A patdown showed him to be carrying a screwdriver in each pocket, a pair of knit gloves, and a pair of plastic gloves. The man told police he was fixing up his boss’s house in the 1800 block of Harvey, and living there while doing so. He said he was on his way home from 16th and Lombard. He was sent on his way.

There was something in the air that night, Fernando …
January 4, 2008, 9:47 PM
A concerned citizen called to report a suspicious red passenger car in the 1600 block of Clinton. An officer found the car parked, running and occupied by a man. At the officer’s approach, the driver rolled down his window, upon which a heavy smell of marijuana became apparent. The driver was asked to step out of the car. Devin D. Johnson, 19, of the 1800 block of Cermak, Chicago, told police he was smoking a joint, and gave permission for a search of the car. Police located a green, leafy substance ["shake"; see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shake_(cannabis) ] throughout the interior of the car, both front and back. They also recovered a digital scale, three $20 bills, three $10 bills, two $5 bills and four $1 bills, all in a shoebox. There was also a clear bag containing 29 smaller baggies of marijuana; the smaller bags were stamped with red hearts. A total of 26.5 grams of pot was recovered. After being read his rights, Johnson made a statement to police, in which he said he had been smoking weed and cruising. He drove to the 1600 block of Clinton to pick up his friend, Fernando, but police approached him before Fernando came out. Johnson said he bought the drugs three weeks earlier at a party, and asserted that he got a good deal on it since it was already individually packaged. He said he had never sold pot before but planned to start and charge $10 per bag. Johnson was charged with two felony counts: possession of marijuana, and possession with intent to deliver.

December 31, 2007, 10:30 AM

The driver appeared fidgety and nervous, prompting a call for backup officers. When asked whether he had been drinking or using drugs, driver David S. Zadwornyj, 27, of Brookfield, stated he did some drugs, and a spoon used in the process was under his seat. Passenger Frank L. Minniti, 28, of North Riverside, told police he had a syringe in his sock; he was also in possession of a spoon that showed burn marks. A search of the Ford revealed a syringe, rolled-up tinfoil, a spoon with burns and drug residue, and several clear plastic baggies under the front seat. The console contained three rolled tinfoils with possible drug residue. After being read his rights, Minnitti stated he called Zadwornyj and asked to purchase heroin. Minnitti said Zadwornyj picked him up at North Riverside mall, then drove to 16th and Harlem. There, Minnitti said, the driver handed him a syringe and told him he was fresh out of heroin, but intended to go to a clinic to get some methadone. Minnitti said he still wanted heroin, but Zadwornyj told him they would get methodone first. Zadwornyj told police he had a $20 per day heroin habit since age 16, and had purchase heroin in the city the previous night. Zadwornyj was charged with possession of a syringe, possession of drug paraphernalia, improper lane use, and avoiding a traffic control device. Reckless speeder gives false name, leads cops on bizarre chase into Cicero
November 3, 2007, 3:55 PM
An officer stopped a red Olds sedan for doing 53 MPH in a 30 MPH zone in the 6400 block of Ogden, and was able to pull the car over at Ogden and Austin. The driver stated her license was at home, and gave police the name “Drenisha Wideman”, for which no record exists in the state computer files. The officer told the driver to follow him to the Berwyn police station where she could be positively identified. Twice during the process, the driver began to leave and had to be stopped. At one point, when the driver was stopped at Park and Ridgeland because of a train, she tried to back up and pass the squad car. The officer got out of his squad and told the driver the shut off the car. He said it three times, but instead of cooperating, the woman drove directly toward the officer, nearly knocking him down. She then attempted to flee and elude police by speeding up, disobeying stops, overtaking other cars on both the right and the left, failing to yield at numerous intersections, driving the wrong way on one-way streets, and so forth. The chase began at Park and Ridgeland, and led police on a strange journey that ended when the Olds suddenly stopped in the middle of the street in the 2500 block of 57th Ct. The woman got out of the car, ran into an apartment building, and tried to shut the door on the officer. The officer managed to get inside, but the woman locked herself in a bedroom. In the bedroom, the highly combative woman lunged toward a dresser, causing police to fear she was going for a weapon. It took three officers to handcuff the kicking and screaming woman whose real name, fingerprints showed, was Easter P. Wright. Wright was charged with resisting officers, fleeing and eluding police, reckless driving, reckless conduct, and driving without a license.
5:44 PM
Wright remained combative in booking, adding a charge of disorderly conduct to the list. Four people were needed to restrain her during a search of her person, during which she twisted and pulled away, dropped to the ground and swung her arms.
6 PM
Wright asked to go to the hospital for abdominal pains. Once at MacNeal, she refused to tell doctors her name or birthdate and yanked the IV and blood-pressure monitors out, so she was returned to jail.

Beer cans all over the place
October 14, 2007, 3:11 AM
An officer on foot patrol in the parking lot in the 7100 block of Ogden noticed a black Chevy Tahoe with temporary Illinois plates. One open, empty Modelo beer can stood on the ground by each of the front doors. Inside the SUV, two more open Modelos were visible in cupholders, another lay open on the fllor, and in the back were two 12-pack boxes of Modelo, also opened. Within minutes, two men entered the Tahoe. As it pulled away from its parking spot, many empty beer cans could be seen, not just the two the officer originally spotted. The Tahoe turned onto Ogden without signalling, and was stopped by police at Maple. When the officer approached the car, he could see the two beers filling the cupholders earlier were now gone. Driver Tiverio Lopez, 25, of Milwaukee, WI, was arrested and charged with failure to signal, no insurance and transportation of open alcohol.
