Name game

An officer stopped a man after seeing the subject carrying a black plastic bag and walking northbound through the 2300 block of Ridgeland/Elmwood alley while looking into trash cans. The man was unable to show any identification, and told the officer he was “Robert J. Jones.” A check of that name came back “no record on file.” When the officer asked him his name again, the man said his real name was Lawrence J. Randa. A check of that name revealed an active arrest warrant, for which he was extradited to Will County.

Men accused of menacing motorist

Police responded to a call from Harlem and Roosevelt, where a 26-year-old North Riverside man reported he was inside a car when three men began to yell at him, and one man began to punch the car with his fist. Police held the three men, who were all reportedly verbally combative and appeared intoxicated.
Disorderly conduct tickets were issued to Michael R. Callahan, 29, of Brookfield; John J. McDonald, 53, homeless; and Daniel A. Mengoni, 43, of Cicero.

Sauk Village pair stages fight at major intersection

A man and woman, residents of Sauk Village, argued in the street at Cermak and Oak Park Avenue. Police responding to the disturbance saw the 28-year-old man’s face was covered with bleeding scratches. The victim told police he and the woman argued over his drinking, and she slapped and scratched him. The 25-year-old woman was charged with domestic battery.

Fight victim won’t sign complaint after all, but warrant for witness surfaces

A man and a woman told police to stop a black Cadillac at Ridgeland and 26th because a woman involved in a street fight was the front seat passenger. Police stopped the Cadillac. The 42-year-old woman passenger, a resident of the 700 block of north Christiana, Chicago, was accused of punching her pregnant 23-year-old daughter in the face. The daughter later refused to sign the complaint. Name checks of all involved parties and witnesses revealed an active DuPage County arrest warrant for one young man, so he was arrested and processed.

Sell fake drugs and carry a big stick

Police responded to calls complaining of apparent drug dealing by two men at Gunderson and 19th. Police located the two men described to dispatchers; the pair were standing on the corner with a baseball bat. Asked why they were there, one man, Bruce J. Williams—a 17-year-old resident of the 6500 block of 19th—said he was “just hanging out.” The second man, Juan A. Forester --an 18-year-old resident of the 1900 block of Elmwood—explained his presence by saying he was just dropping off a baseball bat the younger man wished to borrow. Neither was able to show ID to police. In the area immediately around the two men, police found an empty Newport cigarette box containing four clear bags that appeared to be marijuana. Also very nearby was what looked like a handgun, lying between some bushes and a building with the same address as that given by the younger man. After hearing his Miranda rights, Forester told police he and Williams decided to sell “burn bags” (containing oregano, rather than pot) for $5 a pop. Forester said they tried for an hour without luck. He told police the bat was needed because they were having “trouble with some dudes” in the area. Williams told police the same thing, adding that the gun—which proved to be an airgun—belonged to someone called “Marcus” who lives near 21st and Gunderson. He said “Marcus” left the airgun for them because they were having problems with members of a well-known street gang driving by on a daily basis. The “burn bags”, indeed, contained no marijuana. Forester and Williams were both cited for disorderly conduct.

Excessive noise gets Stratus, van, impounded

An officer’s attention was forcibly drawn to a grey Dodge Stratus because of the “distinct thumping sound” emanating from the car, audible 200 feet away. The officer stopped the car in the 6300 block of 26th. Driver Giovanni Alejandre, 17, of Channahon, received a $500 ticket for violating Berwyn’s noise ordinance. The Stratus was impounded by police.

Police over 75 feet away could hear noise from a blue Ford van at 16th and East, and pulled the vehicle over near Wesley. Driver Jorge Mireles, 20, of the 2200 block of Clarence, received a ticket for the noise violation, and the Ford was impounded.

Syringes + kids = confiscate

A man in the 2200 block of Kenilworth called police when he saw four children walking past on the sidewalk, carrying syringes. The man told police he took the syringes away from the juveniles and called immediately. Officers spoke with the kids, who led them to another syringe lying on the grass at the northwest corner of 23rd and Kenilworth. The juveniles said nobody had gotten stuck with a needle. The syringes were taken to MacNeal Hospital for safe disposal.

An officer patrolling an area that has suffered a lot of recent graffiti and burglaries saw a green Ford van drive past 27th and Cuyler for the second time in 10 minutes; its brake lights were always on, even while the van accelerated away from a stop sign. The officer was about to stop the van at 27th and Cuyler when the front seat passenger got out and walked away southbound. The van went east on 27th, south on Highland, and west on 29th. Next, the officer saw the passenger who left the van walking west on 28th, so he got out of the squad car and asked the man if he could talk to him. The officer asked 18-year-old Mark A. Mercado, of the 6300 block of 28th, to remove his hands from his jacket, upon which Mercado moved as if to run. Mercado stopped when he saw a second police car. Mercado called the officer insulting names, also stating “F@&@& you, fat pig, I ain’t done nothing wrong.” The officer told him he only wished to ask what he was doing, to which Mercado responded with more name-calling. When asked his name, Mercado replied, “F@*@ you!” He refused to remove his hands from his jacket; a bulge visible in the jacket led the officer to suspect a weapon, so the officer told Mercado he was about to frisked. Mercado wriggled around to avoid the search. The officer told him to stop resisting and get his hands out where they could be seen. Mercado yelled loudly, “POLICE BRUTALITY! HELP ME, THEY’RE BEATING ME UP!” The officer told him if he did not cooperate he would be handcuffed. Mercado replied, “GOOD! I’M GOING TO SUE ALL YOU M#($*@F@)$ING PIGS!” HE began to kick at the officer and swing his body in an aggressive manner while stating he intended to “kick your a$$!” After another struggle, he was handcuffed and arrested for assault and for resisting an officer.

Juvenile warned after glass-breaking seen

A Macneal Hospital security employee told police he saw a girl break a glass bottle near cars parked in the MacNeal lot behind Janura Park in the 2900 block of East. Police warned the 12-year-old girl if she did it again the hospital would sign a complaint against her.

Tool-toter talked to

Because of numerous recent burglaries, police stopped a man they saw walking in the alley behind the 6700 block of Roosevelt. The man, who said he was homeless and 50 years old, told them he was headed for McDonald’s at Harlem and Roosevelt. A patdown for officer safety revealed the man was carrying a pair of pliers and other rusted hand tools in a backpack. He was advised and sent on his way.

Six-pack empty by end of juvenile joyride
March 24, 2008, sometime between midnight & 3 AM
An officer noticed a white Chevy van driving around the parking lot of the Mobil station, Cermak and Riverside drive. All three boys in the van, including the one at the wheel, looked very young. Police stopped the van. In plain view on the floorboard was a bag containing an empty 6-pack of Miller Lite beer bottles. The boys were taken into custody; one had marijuana. The driver, a 15-year-old boy, was charged with driving without a license, no insurance, no seat belt, possession of alcohol by a minor, illegal transportation of alcohol and curfew violation. A second boy, age 16, was cited for violating curfew. The third boy, age 14, was charged with violation of curfew and pot possession. The boy’s mothers were called to fetch them. The van was impounded.

Cops round up wanted man, pot-toting juvenile

More after-school shenanigans: police were dispatched to a “fight in progress"at 15th and Highland. An officer saw a group of hoodie-wearers (matching the combatants’ descriptions) walking northbound in the 1300 block of Highland, and stopped them. One was a man who at first claimed he was “Cesar Avilas"and said he was 18 years old, though when asked his birth date, gave one that would have made him 21. He then showed police a temporary labor ID with the name “Cesar Avilas” and his own picture. Because of the lack of solid identification, he was fingerprinted, and turned out to be Juan Soriano, age 22, of Cicero. Soriano had two active arrest warrants out of Cicero. Berwyn police charged him with disorderly conduct, then handed him over for those warrants. A second subject was a 15-year-old male juvenile, from the 1800 block of Lombard in Cicero. For some reason, he initially told police he was 17, then changed it to 16, then finally admitted he was 15. He was carrying some marijuana, for which he received a possession ticket. He, too, was charged with disorderly conduct.

WEDGE mission nets wanted Chicagoan

During a WEDGE (West Suburban Directed Gang Enforcement) task force mission, police stopped a man at 26th and Ridgeland because of unspecified suspicious activity. He was arrested and processed after police learned that Juan C. Carmona, Jr., 23, of the 900 block of west 18th Place, Chicago, was wanted by Cook County for aggravated battery. Lie obliges police to arrest Woodridge woman

An officer on patrol noticed a woman running southbound on Maple from 30th, with two men chasing her, so he stopped all three. The woman identified herself as “Cindy Rojas”, age 25, and said she was upset following an argument with her 22-year-old boyfriend, a Wood Dale man, and was trying to walk away from him. Police spoke with the beau and with the second man, a 21-year-old Bensenville resident. A check of the name “Cindy Rojas” revealed an active South Dupage County arrest warrant; when the officer informed the woman she was under arrest, “Rojas” admitted she was actually Mayra A. Marquez, 19, of Woodridge. Once this was confirmed via fingerprints, Marquez was charged with attempted obstruction of a peace officer.

Bold but baseless threats

An officer spotted a man staggering and stumbling along westbound on 38th near Kenilworth, and asked him whether he was all right. The man said, “I’m a little f@*#ed up,” adding that he did not know where he was coming from, but knew he was walking home to Cicero. The officer requested identification, and the man produced a driver’s license while stating, “I can’t f---ing believe you, you m-----f-----!” A check of the man’s name revealed an arrest warrant out of Kane County, so the officer arrested Michael Novakovic, 44, of Romeoville. En route to the police station, Novakovic said, “Do you know who I am? I’m gonna kick your ass, m-----f-----!”. He was processed for the warrant, and also charged with public intoxication.
