Cop noticed revoked-license driver’s car because of loud stereo
June 21, 2008, 1:03 AM
An officer heard the loud stereo coming from a grey Pontiac Grand Am, which was parked at a Shell gas station pump in the 6400 block of Ogden, still running. One man, apparently the driver, was at the payment window. The officer saw a man in the Pontiac’s front passenger seat tip over two bottles of Miller Lite beer.
The officer informed the two men the music was too loud, so the driver instructed the passenger to turn it down. The driver was unable to produce the requested driver’s license, but identified himself as Gume Cortez, 28, of the 6900 block of Windsor. A check of his name revealed his license had been revoked by the state of Illinois. Cortez told police the car belonged to his girfriend. When asked whether he had driven it to the gas station, Cortez did not answer at first, reportedly saying “Come on, officer, come on!”
After perusing Cortez’s driving record, the assistant US attorney approved a charge of felony driving with a revoked license. Additional charges included misdemeanor driving on a revoked, no insurance, and illegal transportation of open alcohol.
