Loud-car impounds

A very loud Chevy Tahoe was stopped in the 3800 block of Harlem for violating Berwyn’s noise ordinance.  The SUV was impounded; a $500 ticket was issued to driver Luis A. Santoyo, 19, of Chicago.

A Hyundai audible more than 250 feet away was stopped at the same location as above and impounded; the $500 citation went to driver Valente Sanchez, 28, of Chicago.

Police impounded a Chevy Impala because it could be heard more than 250 feet away.  Romeoville resident Julio Marzano, 20, was cited for noise and fined $500.

Police impounded an unusually loud black Chevy Tahoe after stopping it at 24th and Ridgeland for violating the city noise ordinance.  The $500 noise citation was issued to driver Ricardo Gutierrez, 35, of Broadview.  The SUV could be heard a startling 300 feet away.

Loud car roundup

May 28, 2010
The following drivers were stopped because police could hear their stereos more than 75 feet away, in violation of Berwyn’s noise ordinance.  Each vehicle was impounded and the driver fined $500:  Robert Ruiz, 25, of Chicago; Jose A. Vela, 36, Cicero, who was also cited for driving on a suspended license and with suspended plates; Jose L. Ramiriez, 24, Chicago; Nestor Munoz, 39, Cicero, and Ricardo Martinez, 27, of Chicago.

Impounded

A Ford Explorer and a Cadillac Escalade were stopped by police and impounded for excessive noise volume.  $500 tickets were issued to drivers Rodrigo Delatorre, 26, of the 7100 block of 16th, and to Hernan Masso, 19, of Cicero.

A man told police he was jumped by two men in the gangway of his apartment building in the 1900 block of Grove. The two assailants ordered him to lie down on the ground and pointed what he believed was a plastic BB gun at his head.  The gunman said, “don’t give me any s%^&” and asked, “what’s in the backpack?” The victim said his backpack contained nothing but medication and clothes, but he later told police it also had two Nikon cameras worth $600.

Someone broke into a parked Escalade in the 1900 block of Elmwood and destroyed the dashboard while extracting the car radio.

A 71-year-old woman heard a crash and found a rock in her kitchen sink in the 1600 block of Clarence. The projectile damaged the window and storm window.

A man reported his mother’s white 2005 Toyota Corolla was stolen from a parking spot in the 6300 block of 14th St.

A clerk at a convenience store in the 2600 block of Ridgeland told police she was robbed by a male assailant wearing a blue face mask. The man removed a silver revolver from the waistband beneath his sweatshirt and demanded, “give me all the money.” The clerk told police she was nervous and had a hard time opening the register, at which point the man menaced her and demanded, “give me the big money.” She handed over approximately $115 and the assailant demanded that she lift up the cash drawer to reveal any other cash. None was present. The assailant left, with the cash drawer. A witness gave police a description and they picked up a suspect a couple of blocks away. When she viewed a lineup, the witness told cops,” That’s him! I recognize those pants! There’s a big B on them.” Charges are pending.

Persons unknown broke the windshield of a black Jeep Cherokee parked in the 1800 block of Cuyler. The car was “keyed” along its length and vandalized with black spray paint on headlights and windows.

Police impounded five vehicles for violating the noise ordinance, and issued $500 tickets to the following drivers: Jose Angel Cabrera, 18, of Cicero; Alberto Marron, 24, of Cicero; Alvaro Marroquin, 20, of 2738 Kildare, Chicago; Lenny L. Davis, 29, 1301 S. Tripp, Chicago; and Alfonso Arroyo-Delgado, 34, 2629 Clarence.

Signs of spring:  noisy vehicles impounded and one felony arrest

A green Pontiac Grand Am was impounded after police stoped it for violating the noise ordinance in the 6700 block of Cermak.  The $500 ticket was issued to driver Amanda L. Hopp, 26, of Cicero.

In the 6200 block of Cermak, police pulled over a red Mustang for having an excessively loud stereo.  The car was impounded.  Driver Ricardo Ostiguin, 20, of Cicero, received a $500 citation; he refused sign both the citation and the impound form.

A ridiculously loud white Lincoln Town Car—audible 250 feet away—was curbed by police at 38th and Harlem.  The $500 noise ticket went to driver Mar M. Reynoso, 19, of Cicero; the Lincoln was impounded pending payment.
1:40 PM
Driver Luis Martinex, 20, of Chicago, got his too-loud black Impala impounded after being stopped by police at Cermak and Lombard.  He was cited for noise, as well as for driving unlicensed and uninsured, and for having a cracked windshield.
2:05 PM
Police impounded a tan Pontiac Grand Prix at 38th and Harlem because the car could be heard 200 feet away.  The ticket went to driver Manuel F. figueroa, 34, of Chicago.

In the 6900 block of Cermak, police stopped a noisy Honda Accord and impounded it. Tickets for driving on a suspended license, no insurance and the noise violation went to driver Felipe Albor-Ayala, 23, of Cicero.

Jose L. Robledo, 19, of Cicero, was stopped at 26th and Harlem and had his blue Buick impounded for noise.  He was also cited for driving without a valid license.
5:11 PM
Also stopped at 26th and Harlem for noise was 30-year-old Ilarion Salgado, of Berwyn, driving a silver Chrysler 300.  The Chrysler was impounded.  Salgado had a license that had been revoked for DUI in 2005, and had two DUI convictions after that, so he was charged with felony aggravated driving on a revoked license as well as with violating the noise ordinance.

Police stopped a Suburban in the 6800 block of 21st for violating the noise ordinance.  The SUV was impounded; the ticket and fine went to driver Yoni Guzman, 25, of 2651 S. Homan, Chicago.

Cicero men fined for noise violations

A GMC Jimmy, heard 150 feet away, was impounded for violating the noise ordinance in the 6200 block of Cermak.  Driver Fernando Lopez, 28, of Cicero, was fined.

In the 6700 block of Cermak, police stopped a too-loud Ford pickup truck.  It was impounded; driver Antonio Nunez, 34, of Cicero, was cited for noise and driving unlicensed.

A Honda Civic was impounded for excessive noise in the 6300 block of Cermak; the citation went to driver Dante F. Alba, 24, of Cicero.

A woman saw around eight juveniles (male and female) approach her home and pelt it with eggs in the 2800 block of Home. They fled northbound under a viaduct and disappeared.


Recipe for a bad night: “beer balls”, lost phone, getting Tasered

An intoxicated man was Tasered after belligerence toward police officers who were advising him to leave the area of El Corral tavern in the 6300 block of 26th St. “I was a little buzzed up. That’s where beer balls comes in,” Lorenzo Barrera, 23, of the 2400 block of Clarence reportedly explained later. Police responding to a bar fight asked Barrera to leave, but he protested ,saying he lost his $400 phone in the bar. Events allegedly escalated into a shouting match in the middle of 26th and Highland, where Barrera allegedly told police officers “F#$% you b!#$%es, Berwyn cops are nothing but b@#$%es and n@#$%rs.” He refused to be handcuffed, so an officer deployed his Taser, striking Barrera in the chest and stomach with the prongs. An ambulance brought the suddenly subdued man to MacNeal.

A woman in the 3800 block of Wisconsin heard a loud shattering noise and found a metal piece of lawn furniture inside her home. Replacing the broken glass sliding door will cost $1000.

Police curbed the very loud tan 2001 Chevy Blazer of Jerry T. Mixon, 27, of Maywood, at East and 15th St.  he was ticketed for driving on a suspended license, disobeying the local noise ordinance and no proof of insurance. The Chevy was impounded.

A 1993 Chevy Suburban was found with extensive damage in the 2600 block of 58th St. after it disappeared from the 1200 block of Cuyler early the previous morning. The owner told police her purse had been in the car, containing a Social Security card, $20 cash and a paycheck.

A JVC car CD player, rear deck speakers and a wallet were stolen from a Crown Victoria parked in the 2100 block of Harlem. Thieves broke a rear passenger window.

A woman figured out that her red purse had been stolen from the kitchen table in the 1400 block of Maple after credit card companies called to let her know someone had used her card to buy gas at four different gas stations. She told police she had left the back door open and unlocked to let the dog in and out.

A 22-year-old baby sitter told police as she walked in the 1400 block of Maple with the child she cares for she was approached by a 50-ish man in a black older-model sports car. The man told her she was beautiful and tried to engage her in conversation. She and the child hid between houses so the man could not see which house she worked in, but the creeper waited for her When she threatened to call police, the man told her he was “not afraid of police because he was a building inspector,” and showed her a clip-board. However, he fled when she began to dial her cell phone.

A 72-year-old man told police he suspected an argumentative neighbor left a pile of feces in the front entrance to his apartment building in the 1200 block of Harlem.

A 2000 Chevy owner in the 3300 block of Grove told police that on the previous Friday his car had been burglarized. Taken were prescription drugs Adderall, and Subutex, as well as a Sony CD player, a Ryobi drill, a set of wood chisels and a Winchester knife.


Police chase white van; offender still at large

Police patrolling the alley in the 1500 block of Harvey because of recent break-ins observed a white van behind a foreclosed house. A man fled from the back door into the van and police followed it into Oak Park, where they lost sight of the vehicle. At the home, the basement doorknob had been pried off.

Abraham Sanchez, 47, of Cicero was charged with driving with a suspended license and illegal alley traffic. Police impounded his 1993 Lincoln Continental. Police also impounded the 1998 Dodge SUV belonging to Jose A. Maygora of Cicero, who was stopped in the 6500 block of Cermak for an overly loud sound system.

A shoplifter was observed at the Dollar Store in the 7100 block of Cermak concealing toothpaste and razors in his shirt. The 35-40 year old Hispanic male fled on a light blue bicycle.

Employees of the The World’s Largest Laundry in the 6200 block of Cermak told police they observed an “older” man fleeing east on a bicycle, while balancing three iron trash can lids.

A “fuzz-buster” was stolen from a pickup in the 1300 block of Euclid. Cars were burglarized in the 1300 block of Clarence, the 1400 block of Euclid and the 1400 block of Wesley. Two cars were broken into in the 1300 block of Home. In all instances, windows were smashed to remove cell phone chargers, a radar detector and GPS systems.

A woman pushed the panic button on her remote key chain after observing a man in her red Kia in the 1400 block of Harvey. The man fled when the alarm sounded.

Graffiti was discovered at Heritage School in the 6800 block of 31st St. and on garages in the 3100 block of Kenilworth.

Lock “punched” in apartment burglary

A woman returning home turned her key and pulled the lock right out of her apartment door in the 3100 block of Harlem. Her dwelling had been ransacked. Missing were two checkbooks and a laptop. Police found the neighbor’s lock was also damaged.

Loud car roundup

Gerardo Reyes, 24, of 2718 S. Keeler, Chicago, received a $500 noise violation ticket and had his VW Jetta impounded after police stopped him for violating the noise ordinance in the 6400 block of Pershing.  Reyes was also cited for driving on a suspended license and without insurance.

A 2004 black Dodge Intrepid was stopped in the 6200 block of 36th because its stereo could be heard more than 500 feet away.  It was impounded; the $500 ticket went to driver Charles Espinal, 22, of 3516 Ridgeland.
3:24 PM
In the 6600 block of Cermak, police stopped and impounded a grey BMW 740i audible 125 feet away. The $500 ticket was issued to driver Christian Munoz, 19, of 6222 Roosevelt, Oak Park; he was also cited for driving uninsured, obstructed windshield, and having a tinted cover on his license plate.

Annoying-car-stereo season starts up again

Police stopped a 1999 Ford Mustang at Ridgeland and Ogden after hearing its stereo system emit a “clear, distinct thumping” noise from 150 feet away, in violation of the city prohibition on noise beyond 75 feet away.  The car was impounded for the offense.  Driver Basilio Perez, 26, of 2652 S. St. Louis, Chicago, was unable to show a license when asked by the officer; instead, he produced a Mexican consular ID card.  He was charged with driving without a license and a $500 noise violation.

Roger T. Dziadkowiec, 56, of Chicago, was expelled from McDonalds on Ridgeland and Cermak for intoxication. Police reportedly collected him on the sidewalk outside in possession of an open bottle of vodka.

Someone broke a passenger-side window of a white Honda Civic in the 2400 block of Highland and helped himself to a Pioneer CD player.

Residents discovered pry marks on the front door of an apartment building in the 6500 block of 28th St.

Five-year-old calls 911 a bunch of times

Police ended up breaking a window to enter a building in the 1800 block of Oak Park after a series of abandoned 911 emergency calls. When dispatchers returned the call, they heard only “heavy breathing.” A father told police his five-year-old was playing with the telephone.

Alley ordinance nets career criminal

Police observed a white Ford Econoline illegally traveling up and down the alleys near Oak Park and Cermak. “I’m just looking for wood to build a ramp. I’m a cripple,” the driver explained to police. Joseph Q. Decellis, 53, of the 1600 block of 16th St, was found to have an extensive criminal record with over 51 prior arrests for offenses involving sexual assault, burglary, weapons, larceny and dangerous drugs. He was charged with driving on a revoked license, uninsured vehicle and illegal alley traffic. His van was impounded.

A woman in the 2100 block of Highland thought she was having a break-in when she heard a loud bang and footsteps on her back stairs. Police found no one, but the doorjamb was damaged.

“ComEd guy” scam

Three elderly victims called police after a series of failed gypsy scams involving men in work-jackets masquerading as ComEd employees. In all three instances, the men – alone or in a pair—talked their way into the residence by saying electrical work was being done in the neighborhood. The scammers’ told the “customers” that they were “owed a $50 credit.” The phony employees then offered the refund immediately in cash saying, “I can give you a hundred dollar bill right now if you have $50 change.” The scams occurred in the 3800 block of Kenilworth, the 1200 block of Kenilworth and 1200 block of Oak Park. All victims were over 70 years old. The men were described as a male white 35-40 years old, medium build, with brown hair in a blue work jacket and skull cap and a heavy-set Hispanic male, with a goatee wearing a beige work coat and a dark knit cap.

New TV-free lifestyle not ok with roommate

Police were summoned for a domestic disturbance over a television in the 3600 block of Oak Park. A 50-year-old woman told her 47-year-old male roommate that her therapist had recommended that she limit the amount of TV she watched. According to police: “Because [her] therapist made such a recommendation to her, she attempted to limit her roommate’s viewing habits as well. Her attempt greatly upset [the roommate] who verbally threatened her and told her to get away before something happened.” No charges were filed.

Charity box stolen by job hopefuls

The Taco bell clerk remembered the man with the tear tattoos on his face—and his female accomplice—because they stole the plastic charity change box from the countertop in the 6900 block of Ogden. She told police the pairapplied for jobs there earlier in the week. She gave police their job applications, listing their address at a nearby hotel.

Neighbor beaten with baseball bats

Neighbors saw a man beaten by two men in ski masks in front of his home in the 1500 block of Wenonah and ran out to help. Despite the man’s requests to keep the incident quiet, the neighbors called police, who found him on his porch, bleeding from the head. The man allegedly would not allow the cops inside his home, citing dogs. When taken to MacNeal Hospital for treatment, he told police the assailants demanded the keys to his old Toyota T-100 pickup and then beat him and drove off in a newer model silver van. He allegedly told doctors he had “fallen down the stairs.”

Maintenance man fails to sell church’s stolen snow-blower
January 30, 2010
A woman at Berwyn Baptist Church called police after witnesses reported a man fitting the description of the church maintenance man walking down the 3400 block of Clinton with a large green auger-type snow blower. The LawnBoy 824e Electric Start had been removed from an unlocked storage shed at the church. Carmen Contreras, 47, of the 7100 block of Windsor, allegedly admitted to police that he had “sold the slow blower for $10 to a guy named Jose” whom he met at the nearby Connie’s restaurant. Police recovered the machine near the restaurant, where witnesses told them Jose had “left on a Pace bus.” The church did not press charges for burglary, but Contreras was charged with criminal trespass to property.

Police charged Jose Evans, 26, of the 2400 block of East Avenue in Berwyn, with alleged possession of a bag with 4.9 grams of cannabis. Evans paid a $175 fine.

DUI driver wets herself

Renee Terry, 40, of Fairbury, Ill. was charged with DUI after police allegedly saw her silver 2010 Ford Windstar veer across the yellow line on 16th St. She allegedly told police that she had been visiting her mother in the hospital and had left her drivers license at home. When she urinated in her pants during field sobriety tests, she explained that she was “nervous.” She was charged with driving with license suspended, DUI and driving with an open jug of beer in the car.

Loud car flees dangerously

Felipe Lira, 27, of Cicero, fled police after passing a squad car with radio blaring. Pursued by cop cars, he allegedly blew through stop signs at 25th St. and 61st Ct. then proceeded, “at a high rate of speed with no regard to school children walking in the area or the general public.” When stopped after speeding at more than 40 miles per hour, he allegedly told police, “I’m sorry. Did you stop me for my music?” He was charged with loud music, fleeing and attempting to elude arrest, reckless driving, speeding, and disregarding stop signs. His 2001 white Cadillac Deville was impounded.

Neighbors saw three men break the window of a red 1994 Acura in the 2300 block of Lombard and take a stereo system. They allegedly told police the men fled into Cicero.

A Chevy van was stopped in the 7000 block of Cermak because its stereo could be heard 250 feet away.  Police impounded the van.  Driver Salvador Aguilar Perez, 23, of 5010 south Washtenaw, Chicago, received a $500 ticket for violating Berwyn’s noise ordinance.
