Drunken brawl spills out of house, attracts neighbors’ shocked attention

October 26, 2009, 10:27 PM
Callers to 911 reported hearing a woman scream for help at 2633 Clarence.  As officers approached, dispatchers alerted them that the disturbance had moved outside and men were now brawling in the street.  Police noticed seven or eight people in front of the house; two men saw police, attempted to enter 2633 and, according to the report, “met resistance with the door”.  Officers ordered all parties to lie on the ground, but the men—all of whom reportedly reeked of alcohol—elected not to comply.  Instead, they used abusive language and walked around with clenched fists.  Police said two men pushed them rather than comply with instructions; one had to be Tasered to gain his compliance.

A woman in the house told police the incident started when her son—one of the brawlers—punched her during an argument.  The woman refused to prosecute and was uncooperative with police.  During the ride to the police station, the son—Michael W. Neuman, 19—continuously banged his head against the window and prisoner-divider of squad car #117.  He was also found to have an outstanding warrant out of Stickney, for which he was processed.

Neuman was charged with resisting an officer, battery and disorderly conduct, as was William J. Pusateri Jr, 21, of 10845 south Talman, Chicago.  Terry Stephens, 18, was charged with disorderly conduct.  Candi Neuman, 51, was charged with public intoxication, use of abusive language toward officer, and use of the premises to disturb the peace.

Police reported that, while in the Berwyn lockup, Pusateri yelled, banged on the cell window and attempted to flood his cel.  When told to stop, he allegedly yelled “F@!* YOU!” and spit on the window.

“I’m going to sue every one of you m@*%@^ f)@&@rs!”

October 10, 2009, 11:46 PM
Police were sent to a fight at 16th and Gunderson in front of a restaurant.  Witnesses told police gang members started a fight with people attending a birthday party for a 15-year-old girl inside Cinco Hermanos restaurant, then retreated to My Cousin Vinny’s bar on the same block.  The offenders reportedly threatened restaurant patrons by telling them “we’re coming back with guns and we’ll take care of you”.  Restaurant workers told officers a red van containing gang members pulled into the alley behind the restaurant and told workers they would “get” the restaurant owner.
Since police, according to the report, knew My Cousin Vinny’s to be a gang hangout on weekends, an officer sat in a patrol car at 16th and Gunderson until 12:15 AM.  At that time, the officer reported, he saw a male throw gang signs to restaurant patrons. When asked by police what he was doing, the man stated his brother had called him to say he had been in a fight with people in the restaurant.  The brother—Rodrigo Lopez, 25, of 1907 Clarence—then emerged from My Cousin Vinny’s.  Lopez, according to police, was extremely intoxicated and immediately combative, asking an officer, “What the f@&@ do you want?” When asked for ID, Lopez allegedly responded, “F@*@ you!” Asked how he managed to get into the bar without ID, Lopez reportedly answered, “F@*@ you, I know my rights”.  When advised by police to chill out, Lopez attempted to reenter the bar.  He was ultimately handcuffed but refused to walk to the patrol car, reportedly headbutting two officers; once in the back seat, he continued to be aggressive, kicking an officer in the abdomen and attempting to bite an officer’s hands.  During the ride to the station, police said, Lopez tried to spit blood at them through the partition in the car.  Once at the station, Lopez reportedly remained so combative that the handcuffs could not be removed; he also kicked an officer and banged his forehead on the floor, yelling “I’m going to sue every one of you m@*%@^ f)@)@rs!”
Lopez was charged with battery, resisting arrest and obstruction.
Police informed the owner of My Cousin Vinny’s that the bar would be closed for the night.

Chillin wit my boys

July 30, 2009, 9:52 PM
Concerned citizens alerted police to a fight at 36th and Ridgeland, and explained two subjects ran inside a house at 3627.  Police went to the door; a woman in the doorway said nobody in the house was involved in the incident, but officers asked everyone to come outside.  One subject—reportedly self-admitted gang member Bryan Corro, 17, of 3448 Gunderson, spontaneously stated:
“I was chillin with my boys, drinking—smell my breath.” Police determined Corro’s breath to be alcohol-laden, and he was charged with consumption of alcohol by a minor.

Witnesses told police they saw three males cross the street on bikes throw a bottle and yell gang slogans at a vehicle on Ridgeland.  The original caller reported multiple subjects fighting in the intersection of 35th and Ridgeland, one of whom appeared to a have a rifle or shotgun down ins right pant leg.

Police stopped a male they saw emerging from the 3600 block of Ridgeland alley on a bike; the man was sweating heavily and could not explain his presence there.  The juvenile male, a 16-year-old resident of the 3800 block of Kenilworth, was charged with disorderly conduct.

The house in this incident has hosted trouble in the past and was the scene of a recent outdoor rollcall:  http://www.berwynpoliceblotter.com/index.php/site/comments/this_is_not_catch_and_release_we_take_em_and_we_pinch_em/

“You come inside this house and I’ll shoot you”

July 17, 2009, 12:13 AM
Police responding to a fight in the 3700 block of Wenonah saw two bricks and two open folding knives with four-inch blades lying on the lawn.  At an officer’s knock, a 19-yea-old Lyons woman answered the door and stated it was a party that got out of hand.  Then a man, described by police as intoxicated, emerged and said he had been fighting with friends over the last beer.  The man had blood on his white tank top. When asked about it, he told police it wasn’t blood.  He said he owned the knives on the lawn but did not know how they got there, and assured police there was nobody inside the house.

But an officer came from the rear of the house and told the first cop he could hear a lot of commotion inside the residence.  The man in the tank top—27-year-old Brian L. Venckus—reportedly stated, “that’s just my friend Mark”.  Police told Venckus they would need to get inside the house to be sure that nobody was hurt, and that they could not understand why he and the woman were lying about the person or persons still in the house.  At this, the report said, Venckus grew “belligerent and aggressive”, stating he was a Marine, knew how to box and taught jujitsu.

A second man, also intoxicated, came out the front door. When police asked James F. Dolezal, 51, of Stickney, if anyone remained inside, he reportedly responded, “F@&@ you, you don’t need to know”.  Officers repeated the reasons they did in fact need to know, but Dolezal allegedly told them, “F&#% you, get a warrant, I’m a Marine.  You come inside this house and I’ll shoot you”, then swiftly went back inside, slammed the door and locked it.

Venckus was placed in restraints and backup officers arrived.  Police learned the homeowners, parents of Venckus, were out of town, so Venckus signed a consent to search form in their stead.  The keys provided by Venckus did not work.

A 36-year-old Oak Lawn man arrived at the scene and was given permission by Venckus to break a window and get police into the house.  As he did so, Dolezal opened the door and was arrested.

A search located a man and a woman hiding in a crawl space.  The man initially provided a false name.  Later, police learned he was Victor Cruz, 27, of 3647 Harlem.  Cruz had an outstanding Cook County arrest warrant, for which he was processed.

Dolezal was charged with aggravated assault.  Venckus was charged with disorderly conduct, with a local ordinance court date of August 13 at 3 PM in the community room of the police station, 6410 31st.

The subjects, who appeared to police to be heavily intoxicated, were uncooperative; one reportedly told paramedics, summoned to treat his injuries, to “get the f@&# out of here!” Paramedics reportedly felt the men—one from a block away, the other from Chicago—were too intoxicated to realize the extent of their injuries.  They were taken to the hospital for treatment, and both were later charged with disorderly conduct and one with resisting arrest.
