Berwynite arrested for reckless driving in Forest Park

October 9, 2008

From the Forest Park Review:

Chase ends with arrest

A Berwyn man was charged with reckless driving following an early morning chase Oct. 9 through several streets, alleys and a parking lot.

Jeffrey Harnish, 26, was spotted driving south on Harlem Avenue shortly after 2:30 a.m. at a high rate of speed by an officer patrolling the roadway. When police pulled in behind Harnish, the suspect turned west onto Fillmore Street, turned off his lights and veered into an alley on the 1100 block between Harlem and Elgin streets. The first officer on the scene lost sight of the car, but a second patrol unit attempted to stop Harnish for driving without his headlights. When Harnish saw that the officer who had pursued him was arriving at the scene, he reportedly fled again, this time going south along Harlem Avenue.

A Berwyn squad car tried to block Harnish’s path, but the suspect turned into a parking lot at 7200 Roosevelt Road before finally coming to a stop near a curb. Harnish was pulled from the car and taken to the station, according to police.

His vehicle, a 1996 Geo Storm, was towed for lack of insurance. Authorities reportedly noticed a strong odor of alcohol on Harnish, but the suspect refused to take any blood-alcohol exams.

License already revoked for DUI, but driving nevertheless

October 9, 2008, 5:25 PM
An officer stopped an Impala at Ridgeland and Cermak because its plates were expired and its left brake light was broken.  Driver Manuel Mendez, 27, of 5304 west 23rd, Cicero, told the officer he had no license.  However, the state’s computer database said his license had been revoked for a DUI conviction; he was also convicted of driving with a suspended license. The assistant state’s attorney approved a charge of felony driving despite a revoked license.  Mendez was also charged with driving with expired plates, no insurance, and defective brake light.

Gun accusation not backed up by search, but bag of pot recovered

October 6, 2008, 10:59 PM
An officer saw a brown Buick with temporary plates—westbound in the 6700 block of 19th—blow the stop sign at Oak Park Ave, nearly striking the squad car.  Immediately behind the Buick, also headed west but driving in reverse, was a white Ford SUV.  The Ford’s driver yelled out his window that people in the Buick had pointed a gun at him.  The officer told the Ford driver to pull over and remain at 19th and Oak Park; he then stopped the Buick in the 1900 Oak Park/Grove alley.  No gun was found in the Buick, but a bag of marijuana lay in plain view on the floor. Passenger Kasey Brown, 26, of 1928 Euclid, was arrested and cited for marijuana possession.  Buick driver Cedric T. Jones, 25, of 2123 Kenilworth, had a suspended license and was wanted on a DuPage County arrest warrant.  He was charged with blowing the stop sign, no insurance and driving on a suspended license.

Suspicious car in alley had unlicensed driver

October 6, 2008, 3:31 PM
Tactical officers noticed when a dark blue 1997 Suburban, whose plates registered to a Cicero man, traveled southbound through the 1400 block of Gunderson/Scoville alley, then onto eastbound 15th.  Because the car went through an alley in an area that has suffered a rash of property crimes, police pulled it over.  Driver Cristobal Hernandez, 1645 Ridgeland, told police the vehicle was not his.  He was cited for prohibited alley traffic and driving unlicensed.

Booze & snooze

October 5, 2008, 4:09 PM
Callers alerted police to a grey Cadillac—stopped in traffic, but still running—with a man slumped over the driver’s seat.  Police came to Ogden and Oak Park Ave., woke the driver, shut off the Caddy and took the keys.  When asked whether he was ok, driver Daniel Gerard Mitchell, 53, of 3137 Oak Park, replied, “I was just tired.” Mitchell was unable to tell police where he was headed or where he had been.  He failed numerous field sobriety tests, urinated in his pants and refused a breath test.  He was cited for DUI, improper parking on the roadway, no insurance, and transportation of open alcohol.
