Pedestrians endangered in crosswalk

An officer saw a Dodge pickup enter traffic on 16th from a private drive, just west of Oak Park. Rather than doing this slowly, the truck accelerated instead, forcing a line of vehicles to stop abruptly.  The truck then crossed the 16th/Oak Park intersection, even though it was full of pedestrians, who all had to stop to accommodate the truck.

Driver Jesus Navarrete, 29, of 4637 south Honore, Chicago, was arrested and charged with driving unlicensed and uninsured, failure to signal, improper turn, improper lane use, failure to yield emerging from a private drive, and failure to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk.

Noise violation

Police issued a $500 noise-violation ticket to Edward Mendoza, 33, of Cicero, after stopping his Chrysler 300 for the offense at 16th and East. The car was impounded.

Double the speed limit

A blue Dodge pickup was stopped at Ridgeland and Ogden for doing 60 MPH in a 30 MPH zone.  Driver Oscar Espino, 22, of 2705 S. 61st Ave., Cicero, was charged with speeding and with driving unlicensed and uninsured.

Gang graffiti

Graffiti touting a well-known street gang was found on siding in the 2800 block of Lombard.

Someone put graffiti on two overhead garage doors in the 3500 block of Grove.

Noisy car drivers:  one with two driving histories, the other with two arrest warrants

A Ford van, stopped in the 2300 block of Elmwood for noise created by its lack of a muffler, was impounded for the offense.  Police checking the name of driver Carlos A. Mateo, 25, of the 2300 block of Elmwood, learned he had been arrested both as Carlos A. Mateo and Carlos Mateo.  The van was to be pending payment of the $500 noise-impound fee, plus another $400 in parking fines.  Mateo was charged with driving on a suspended license under one name and with no license at all under the other, as well as for having no insurance and no muffler.

A loud black Honda Civic was stopped at 27th and Harvey. Driver Jose I. Haro*, 22, of Lyons, told the officer he had no license, presenting instead an Illinois state ID.  In fact, Haro’s license was suspended; he also had two outstanding arrest warrants.  The car was impounded; Haro was charged with all of the above.

Covered-up license plate not even real

An officer stopped a vehicle on Lombard at 18th because its thick license plate frame was obscuring the rear plate.  Upon closer inspection, the plate proved to be counterfeit.  Driver Fernando Rivera, 33, of the 2300 block of south 58th Ct, Cicero, was ticketed for driving unlicensed and uninsured, obstruction of registration, improper use of registration and failure to transfer title.

Fugitive not quite fast enough

An officer stopped a Chevy Lumina after clocking it in the 6500 block of Cermak speeding 53 MPH in a 25 MPH zone.  Driver Marcos Solorzano-Medoza, 21,of the 1800 block of Clinton had no license; he was also processed on fugitive arrest warrants out of South Kane County.

Coverup

An officer stopped a Honda CRV seen headed north in the 2300 block of Gunderson, sporting an illegal tinted license plate cover.  Upon closer inspection, it was apparent that the expiration date on the license plate had been altered.  Driver Ana R. Zuniga, 28, of the 2400 block of Highland, had no insurance and her driver’s license had been revoked.  She was cited for the above as well as for the tinted cover and the altered date.  The vehicle was impounded.

Stop the noise!

A Jeep, stopped at Cuyler and 19th for violating Berwyn’s noise ordinance, was impounded. Driver Herman Hernandez, 42, of the 5000 block of west 30th, Cicero, was cited for that and for driving unlicensed.
10:20 AM
While still at Cuyler and 19th to deal with the above stop, an officer heard an extremely loud amplifier in a Chevy.  The vehicle was impounded.  Driver Elisiel Raygoza, 22, of the 1800 block of Cuyler, got the $500 ticket.
12:41 PM
At Wesley and Cermak, an officer stopped an older Lincoln for noise.  Driver Edgar Lechuga, 23, of the 2500 block of Kenilworth, stated he had no license; in fact, his license had been suspended.  Police also learned Lechuga was on parole, and was wanted on two arrest warrants.  The car was impounded, and Lechuga charged with driving despite his suspension, no insurance, and violating the noise law.  Police informed his parole officer of the arrest.

A Land Rover could be heard 100 feet away at Cermak and Cuyler, so it was stopped.  Driver Jesus Reyes, 32, of the 1200 block of Highland, had a suspended license, and had already been arrested for driving during his suspension.  He was charged with felony driving while suspended, as well as for driving uninsured, without valid registration and for improper use of registration.  Not to mention the $500 noise citation.  The Land Rover was impounded, but also put on hold for possible seizure under Article 36.*

Fleeing from a crash

An officer summoned to a crash in the 6400 block of 26th found two vehicles on the sidewalk, midblock: a Mazda sedan and a GMC Jimmy.  Witnesses told police the offender—dressed in red pants, a white shirt and a grey jacket—fled on foot north on Elmwood, where police found him in the 2500 block.  Frank M. Vaia, 19, of the 2100 block of Gunderson, was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, failure to give aid and information, no license on his person, and no front plate on his vehicle.

Safety enforcement zone roundup

Police operated a safety enforcement zone in the 6600 block of Ogden for several hours.  During that time, they stopped numerous drivers with suspended, expired or nonexistent licenses.
12:24 AM
A maroon Chevy Blazer was stopped at random at the above location. As the officer asked the driver for license and insurance, he could see an open bottle of Miller Lite on the rear floor, 1/4 full and cold to the touch. Driver Jose Rocha, 27, of the 2600 block of south Sawyer, Chicago, had a suspended license, so the SUV was impounded.  Rocha was arrested and charged with driving while under suspension, no insurance, suspended registration and illegal transportation of open alcohol.

A man from the 2400 block of south Sawyer, Chicago, was stopped in the zone and could not show a license, just a Mexican ID.  36-year-old Valente Gomez-Favela. driver of a GMC Sierra, had a 6-pack of Miller Lite in the vehicle, with four of the bottles open. He was charged with driving unlicensed and transporting open alcohol, and the vehicle was impounded.

A black Dodge Stratus was stopped in the zone.  Driver Samuel Alvarez, 28, of the 7000 block of Pershing, could not produce the required driver’s license, only a Mexican ID.  He told the officer he had no license; in fact, his licence had been suspended, so the Dodge was impounded.  Alvarez was charged with driving suspended and uninsured.

$500 fine for loud SUV

Police stopped and impounded a too-loud Chevy Suburban at 16th and Oak Park. The $500 ticket went to driver Alfredo Solis, 19, of the 1500 block of Grove.

Over the sidewalk and through the fence, it’s onto the tracks we go

Police responded to a call about an unoccupied car sitting on the Burlington Northern train tracks at Stanley and Euclid. Police saw the misplaced Honda Accord, and were able to contact BNSF railroad in time to halt train traffic.  The driver, a Des Plaines woman, was reportedly existing the MacNeal hospital parking structure when she hit the gas instead of the brakes.  The Accord jumped the curb, hit two parking meters, cleared the sidewalk, continued across the grassy parkway, went through a metal fence and came to rest on the tracks; this was observed by numerous witnesses.  Bilquees T. Hussain, 56, was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident; driving with an expired license and no insurance, and damage to city property.  Damaged parking meters #128 and 129 were taken to the police station.

Busted on seat belt charge

A police sergeant stopped a blue Ford Mustang at 16th and Wesley because its front passenger was not wearing a seat belt.  The passenger explained that she needed to remove the seat belt in order to “adjust her bra strap.” The ill-timed underwear adjustment ended up costing driver Veronica Velez, 19, of the 4700 block of north Kennicott, Chicago, who received tickets for her passenger’s mammary lapse, as well as for having no license on her person, driving without insurance, and with registration that was both suspended and expired.

Driver requests break; cop gives one to passersby instead

An officer stopped a too-loud Ford Escape on Vacin at Harvey after hearing it on Cermak.  Driver Tito Delgado, 44, of the 2100 block of Harvey, reportedly acknowledged the music was loud, but asked for “a break”.  Instead, unwilling listeners got one: the vehicle was impounded, and Delgado received a $500 noise-violation ticket.
9:06 PM
A GMC Envoy was stopped for violating the noise ordinance in the 6400 block of Cermak.  Driver Mario Ayala, 18, of the 5000 block of west Oakdale, Chicago, received a ticket and the SUV was impounded.
9:42 PM
At Harvey and Vacin, Chevy Suburban driver Eduardo Gonzalez, 33, of Stickney, was ticketed for noise; the SUV was impounded.
