Crossing guard struck by car

A crossing guard told police that, while at his post at Riverside and Kenilworth during school dismissal time, he noticed a dark-green older Infiniti sedan recklessly pass several other vehicles on the right.  The Infiniti then struck the guard before fleeing the scene.  The victim noted the license number of the offender’s car; it was registered to a man in the 7000 block of 16th St.

DUI crash

Dispatchers reported a grey 2007 Pontiac struck a stoplight at the corner of Harlem and 26th and was fleeing the scene.  A witness told police the offending car drove recklessly around his vehicle, cut him off, hit the light and attempted to flee, but the crash left the Pontiac undrivable.  Riverside police brought back the offending driver after catching him fleeing westward on foot on 26th St.  Juan R. Sustaita, 28, of Cicero, reportedly smelled of alcohol; police recovered 8.9 grams of marijuana from his coat pocket.  His blood alcohol level was measured at .264, more than triple the legal threshold for driving under the influence.  Police charged him with DUI, DUI over .08, damage to city property and leaving the scene of a crash.

Naperville man arrested for DUI

Police in the 2200 block of Harlem stopped a black Cadillac Deville for doing 61 MPH in a 35 MPH zone, weaving in and out of lanes and nearly striking another vehicle.  Driver Michael T. Stepps, 33, of Naperville, was charged with DUI.

Juan Delatorre, 42, of the 3700 block of Ridgeland, broke a window so he could yell at people in front of his home, police said. He was treated at MacNeal for a cut hand.

Underage drinkers on Cermak

Police charged the manager and bartender of Mateo’s tavern in the 6500 block of Cermak with serving alcohol to a minor. Luis Medina, 37, of Worth, and Heather Brasher, 31, of Chicago, were charged after police arrested 19-year-old Vedran Basic of LaGrange Park for public intoxication in front of the bar. Police reported that Medina locked the door of the tavern and delayed opening it, prompting speculation that other underage drinkers fled through the back door.

Police stopped a damaged 1997 white BMW in the 2300 block of East; the car was limping along “low to the ground, emitting sparks and smoke from the passenger front tire.” Driver Anthony Martinez of the 1200 block of Cuyler told police he did not know how the fresh damage and red paint transfer had occurred on his vehicle, nor how his passenger tire had been bent off the rim. Coincidentally, police discovered a damaged red car in the 2400 block of Ridgeland with a BMW hubcap lying nearby. The BMW was impounded. Martinez was charged with DUI, driving uninsured, leaving an accident scene and unsafe tires.

Unwanted party guest from hell

Police were summoned to help a hostess remove a party guest in the 1400 block of Cuyler. The 24-year-old man, whose phone number is listed in Bellwood, was found to be intoxicated, and when an ambulance arrived, he began “punching, kicking and fighting officers in the middle of the street.” He also, “bit an officer in the right forearm with his teeth in attempt to defeat arrest.” When the man was subdued, police found two bags of cannabis on his person each containing .2 grams with the words “stay high” on each bag. One police officer sustained a back injury and another ripped his trousers and suffered abrasions on his knee.  Felony battery charges are pending.

Police impounded a Toyota Camry after finding it in the front yard of a house in the 3000 block of Harlem, 40 feet from a crash site where it hit a parked Nissan Altima. Driver Lynn Van Buskirk of the 400 block of East in Oak Park, reportedly told police she did not know why her vehicle was off the roadway on a lawn. She was charged with DUI and driving on the sidewalk.

Loud van impounded

A Chevy van was stopped in the 7000 block of Cermak because its stereo could be heard 250 feet away.  Police impounded the van.  Driver Salvador Aguilar Perez, 23, of 5010 south Washtenaw, Chicago, received a $500 ticket for violating Berwyn’s noise ordinance.

Crossing guard struck by car after reportedly enduring verbal abuse from driver

A 61-year-old crossing guard, assisting children after school at 15th and Elmwood, reported a vehicle struck him in the leg after its driver swore at and disobeyed instructions from him.  The guard was dressed in a clearly-labeled fluorescent safety vest and was holding a red stop sign at the time of the incident.  The driver, the victim said, attempted to travel east on 15th durin school dismissal time.  When the guard intervened, the driver reportedly swore and verbally abused him, stating that he did not have to listen to th crossing guard because he was “not a cop”.  The driver drove around the block, then returned and confronted the guard anew.  This time, the victim stated, the driver slowly allowed his car to hit the guard in the leg, upon which the victim called police.  Driver Victor Roman, 19, of 1516 Harvey, was charged with failure to yield, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, and driving uninsured.

Loud van

An overly loud Ford van was stopped for same in the 6200 block of Ogden.  The van was impounded for the noise offense.  Driver Jose Lopez, 19, of 3204 Lombard, got the $500 noise ticket, plus citations for driving unlicensed and uninsured.

Loud music + belligerent intoxication = slammer

A police officer heard loud music pounding from an apartment near Wesley and Vacin and shined his spotlight on the window. A man’s voice called out “Shut that f^&*ing light off, you mother f&*#er!” When the cop identified himself as a Berwyn police officer, the voice allegedly replied, “I don’t give a f*&@ who you are! Turn that f*&@in light off,” and “F*&@ you. I don’t care who you are, I’ll listen to my music when I want to.” A man —appearing highly intoxicated—exited the apartment and approached the officer in a hostile manner while yelling obscenities. After a struggle, the officer handcuffed Fernando R. Razzino and brought him to the police station. He was charged with assault and resisting arrest.

Cop thinks lady looks like a dude

Ticketing cops ruffled a traffic violator’s feathers when they mistook her for a man. A driver began to argue with a community service officer who was ticketing near Jefferson Elementary school in 7000 block of 16th St. A responding police officer overheard the driver yelling and dropping F-bombs “in a low voice”, so --observing that the driver had “short combed back hair and a visible mustache”—told the ticketing cop “write this guy a local ordinance citation.” The driver, who turned out to be a 25 year old woman with two children in the back seat —yelled out the window, “I’m a girl!” She told the officers “I’m going to tell [your supervisors] that you called me a dyke!” The officers denied using that word.  The driver, a resident of the 2600 block of Oak Park, yelled, “You’re lying!” and drove away.

SUV shopper turns thief

A man posing as a potential buyer stole an SUV from a woman in the 6700 block of 16th St. After examining the gray 2007 GMC Envoy, he asked for the title to compare VIN numbers, then hopped into the drivers seat and sped off with the car. He later called the victim’s husband and threatened the family and their daughters if they contacted police. The thief was described as a male Hispanic, 28 years old, wearing a black baseball hat, gray and blue hoodie, red shirt and Bulls pants.

Man reportedly sics dog on human

A man told police he was taking out the trash in the 1900 block of Grove when he heard his downstairs neighbor’s voice ordering his dog to “sic ‘em.” The white pitbull, named “Chucky,” bit him once in the leg above the ankle. Police brought the victim to MacNeal Hospital where he got seven stitches. Police records indicated Chucky had come to attention twice previously for biting someone else and for lack of registration.

A car being prepared for sale was stolen from the car wash in the 6200 block of Ogden. Employees told police two black teenage males were seen taking the car. The black 1999 Pontiac Grand Am belonged to Midway Auto Sales on Cicero Ave.

An older white cargo van was stolen from the 6300 block of 26th St. The owner told police it has a large American flag decal in the back window.


Indecent Exposure

A woman stepped out of her house in the 1500 block of Highland and observed a man seated on the porch across the street with his pants down, masturbating. The man called to her; she called police. The offender was described as a male Hispanic, 25 years old with dark complexion, wearing blue jeans, a blue hoodie, a blue cap and gym shoes.

A woman called police after she saw a man masturbating while standing in the window in the 1400 block of Harvey.

Prostitution sting

Rudolfo Molina, 23, of Chicago, was taken into custody in the 6500 block of Ogden Ave. for allegedly soliciting a prostitute. He was charged under the Cook County Public Morals Nuisance Ordinance. His 2004 Buick Rendezvous was impounded.

DUI hit and run arrest

Police found four damaged cars on the street and one up on the sidealk in the 3800 block of Cuyler.  The one on the sidewalk had something extra:  another car’s front bumper and license plate imbedded in its side, left by a 2003 Impala.  Police located the owner, who told them her son, the car’s driver, had come to her and informed her that two guys had smashed her car and taken off, and that he had followed the culprits but lost them.  Police spoke to driver James D. Jackowiec, 18, of 3526 Cuyler, noting in the report that he smelled of alcohol.  He was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, improper lane use, leaving the scene and driving under the influence.

School bus stop sign goes unheeded

An officer near Clinton and 35th saw a white Ford Explorer pass a schoolbus, which was unloading children and had its red lights on and its stop sign activated.  Driver Lorena Chavez, 24, of 3213 Highland, already had a suspended license, so the SUV was impounded.  She was also cited for passing a schoolbus whose stop indictors were flashing.

Stereos heard beyond 200 feet get Oldsmobiles towed

In the 6600 block of Cermak, an Olds Alero was impounded because its stereo was so loud it could be heard more than 200 fet away.  The $500 ticket went to driver Victor M. Campos, 21, of 2520 south California, Chicago.

An other equally noisy Olds got hooked, this time from the 6700 block of Cermak.  Driver Megan Elizabeth heinzel, 20, of Bridgeview, received the $500 ticket.

Fatal hit and run

In the 6200 block of Ogden, a man with a roadwork crew died after being struck by a car.  The car fled the scene without stopping; the man, Orlando Farias, 47, of Romeoville—who was wearing his reflective safety vest—had been working marking lines in the roadway.
Cicero police later contacted Berwyn to report they found a vehicle matching the offending car’s description.  The car had extensive front and rear damaged and was registered to someone in the 1500 block of Austin.

Loud SUV impounded

A Ford Explorer was stopped in the 7000 block of Ogden because its stereo could be heard 150 feet away.  Driver Hector De La Torre, 23, of 2419 Springfield, Chicago, received a $500 ticket and the SUV was impounded pending payment.

Noise impounds

A Chevy Impala, audible over 150 feet away, was stopped in the 3900 block of Harlem.  Driver Richard R. Garcia, 17, of 5222 S. Central, Chicago, received the $500 noise violation ticket; the car was impounded.

In the 6500 block of Ogden, police stopped a too-loud Honda Civic and impounded it.  The $500 ticket went to driver Jonathan Polanco, 21, of Cicero.

Police impounded a Cadillac Deville for violating the noise ordinance in the 6300 block of Ogden.  Driver Thomas J. Baxa, 27, of 245 Villa Park, was issued the $500 ticket and the car was impounded.

Salvador Tinoco, of 1213 S. Kenilworth, was pulled over for erratic driving and found to have 1.1 grams of cocaine folded inside a dollar bill in his back pocket.

A brown and black Mongoose Rebel bike disappeared from a home in the 6900 block of 34th St.

Wire cutting bandit strikes again

A man in the 1900 block of Grove observed his neighbor cutting the outside cable wires to his home. As police took the report a second neighbor reported that her cable had abruptly gone out at midnight. She told police this was not the first time the neighbor had severed the wires.

Sound impounds

Police stopped Juan Palomino, 20, of Cicero in the 6600 block of Cermak for a sound system heard in excess of 75 feet away. Palomino’s green 2000 Chevy Astro van was impounded and he was fined $500.

11:35 AM
Police impounded the silver 2000 Pontiac of Armando Carillo, 24, of Chicago for a too-loud sound system. He was also charged with driving with a suspended license, no valid drivers license and not having insurance.

Burglars leave gun in woman’s garage?

A woman in 1500 block of Highland the called police after observing a silver Chrysler parked in front of her opened garage door. The car sped off and responding police searched the garage finding a fully loaded model 17 9 mm Glock handgun, and three extra ammunition clips. All three identifying numbers had been illegally scratched off of the gun and its case. The woman claimed that she had no knowledge of the gun or how it got there.
